LEDYARD CANOE CLUB

For the second straight season, the Ledyard Canoe Club won the Eastern Whitewater Slalom Championship, held on Massachusetts' Farmington River. Dave Nutt, Eric Evans, president John Burton, and Jay Evans '49, former American champion, swept the top four kayak spots. Club members also captured four of the first eight places in the single canoe competition. Senior Wick Walker and current national single canoe champion Tom Southworth teamed up to take the two-man canoe title. Eric Evans also captured the Eastern Wildwater Kayak Championship held on the nearby Mascoma River, with Nutt in third and Jay Evans in fifth. Jo Knight, former Eastern Wildwater champ, placed sixth. It was one-two for the Club in the canoe events, with Burton finishing first followed by Walker.
