John Bowles writes from the Far West: "We recently sold our home in San Mateo (20 miles south of San Francisco) after seventeen very happy years and moved to Capitola, a sleepy little resort and fishing town on Monterey Bay. We've been vacationing and week-ending in this area for a good many years. San Francisco is about an hourand-a-half drive to the north. Closer at hand, about 40 minutes by car, is the Monterey-Carmel area. My employment has been pretty irregular since 1 lost my job with NBC in San Francisco (and don't think that didn't raise a 'stink' in the Bay Area! —JHE) in 1965 so we decided while between jobs to get away from the Bay Area 'rat-race' and see if I couldn't find something to do down in the 'sticks.' About two weeks after signing a one-year lease for our apartment which sits on a cliff overlooking the Bay, my old employers (NBC) offered me a job in S. F. for the next six months. How's that for poor timing? I have rented a room and will buzz home on days off and weekends.

"My oldest son was recently married and lives in Portland, Ore., where he also has a commitment with an Army Reserve unit. Number two boy graduates from U.C., Santa Barbara, in a couple of months, at which time he will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army.

"We have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area ever since my Navy discharge in 1945 and truly enjoy the California style of outdoor living. Current hobbies are golf and beachcombing. For the next six months I can be reached at KNBR, NBC radio, Fox Plaza Bldg. on Market Street."

In addition to furnishing the very welcome personal reminiscence of Wade Gayer,Walt Dodd adds some news about himself and his new operation: "As for myself, the Jolly Chef is prospering and has certainly been a welcome change from politics and pressure of my previous jobs. My blood pressure is lower now than it was a year ago with pills; I sleep all night (and late mornings); and all in all it is a real pleasure to be doing things for one's self and seeing them pay off - mostly.

"Pres Downer spent a weekend with us last summer — he is still a pillar of Brown Shoe, or, to be exact, one of their subsidiaries in the Buffalo Area. George Porter, another pillar of the shoe industry, has a summer home in Hyannis, and we have had several nice visits as well as a frantic trip over to their cottage last January to make sure no pipes had burst, in one of those unusual (for Cape Cod) cold spells - like minus 10, which we aren't supposed to have. Paul Bauder and his wife dropped by a couple of weeks ago to find out if I really liked Cape Cod year-around. He has a summer home at Brewster and seems to be contemplating the quiet pleasures of the Cape, too." Walt's address is now: Jolly Chef restaurant, Rt. 28 at Bass River, S. Yarmouth, Mass.

The Class will join in extending its sympathy to Dr. and Mrs. John Godfrey whose son, John was killed in Viet Nam. Lt. John Godfrey was a graduate of Norwich and was a 2nd lieutenant at the time of sustaining his fatal wounds.

Manchester, N.H., attorney, John Nassikas is presently on special assignment in Washington as Special Counsel to the Republican Minority of the Commerce Committee of Congress.

Telfer Mook continues in the public eye as a member of a 17-member delegation of clergy which recently left New York on a 22-day peace mission that will take them around the world. They will visit religious leaders in seven countries to discuss strategies whereby all major faiths might unify their efforts in seeking peace. The American clergymen will also attend the International Inter-Religious Symposium of Peace in New Delhi, where they will meet with Hindu, Moslem, Buddhist, and Shinto leaders.

Riegel Textile Corporation of New York announces the naming of Whitefoord S. Mays Jr. as a vice president. Before joining Riegel, Mr. Mays was president of Thomas Pride Mills, a division of Fulton Industries. Preceding that position, he was president of Morgan-Jones Inc., from 1956 to 1965. His experience also includes association with J. Walter Thompson as an Account Supervisor, and with Bates Manufacturing Company.

"The Bloody Rockpile," a short novel written by Ted Thorne, is published in last month's Argosy Magazine. It depicts in detail what it would be like for American pilots to attempt a flight into Red China for intelligence purposes. During World War II, the author was a military pilot flying the Hump. The Hump pilots' term for the Himalayan range separating India and China was "The Bloody Rockpile."

Ted is currently completing another novel and researching a definitive book on the space program. Following fifteen years on the editorial staff of the New York Times, he did classified work in the United States space program.

The State University College of New Paltz, N. Y., announces the appointment of Dr. Richard C. Jones, now Acting Dean of State University College, New Paltz, as Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Jones went to New Paltz from the University of New Hampshire in 1948 as professor of biology and became Acting Dean of the College in September 1966.

In addition to having been appointed to the new committee on equality of opportunity, as reported in last month's MAGAZINE, attorney John McLane is keeping up with the trend of things in New Hampshire. Two months ago he addressed the Manchester Rotary Club on the perplexing problem of the New Hampshire tax structure and the lack of a broad-based tax, resulting in the over-burdening of communities and municipalities and the real estate tax, which is 20 percent higher than the national average. He further discussed the question of reducing services or raising more revenue. This will be a crucial issue in the on-coming gubernatorial campaign in the Granite State.

This is the last column of the publishing year: enjoy a good summer, and be sure to drop' in if you happen to be around this way. As far as I know, I shall be here all summer, and the house is easy to find. In the meantime, send along any news you may have of yourself or classmates.
