Times and faces change, as do the seasons. "Doc" Pollard '23 has retired, Francis "Red" Merrill '26 has copied "Doc," and The Great Red Rolfe '31 has died, all of them outstanding men in a special way, and men of Dartmouth who have left their mark on many of us '42's and other alumni. Young Dave Gavitt '59, who has helped to revive Dartmouth roundball, is accepting a new challenge as coach of basketball at Providence College. And George Blaney, a great athlete and fine coach from a hotbed of basketball in Hudson County, N. J., succeeds Dave and will no doubt continue the basketball revival on the Hanover boards.
Yes, times and faces do change. Our class is not quite the class it was, with the loss in recent months of Robert P. Gill, JohnScammon, and John R. Highmark. We mourn the loss of each of them and as a class extend our sincere sympathy to all members of their respective families.
It was also a shock to hear from Phyllys Williams that Class Newsletter Editor Milt is resting and recovering from a recent heart attack. Milt Williams has worked diligently in service to Class and College and we hope that he will not short circuit the rest and recovery route . . . we also applaud Milt's wife's spunk and spirit in continuing to write the newsletter for the next few months. That's a real '42 gal for you! Phyllys concluded the September "letter" with the comment "What a way for a lady's voice to be heard finally in this all-male province!" Well, at any rate we know, Phyllys. where you stand on the matter of coeducation as it relates to Dartmouth College. And so do we respect your opinion!
