OPTIMISM KEYNOTE FOR 1971 AND BEYOND: If the spirit of President John Kemeny is any indication then we are moving into a productive year at the beginning of Dartmouth's Third Century. From Hanover he has announced that "The predominant mood here is one of opti- mism." Dr. Kemeny has also stated that he is "very optimistic about the opening year of our third century." In the same spirit we alumni, as a body of Dartmouth men 4500 strong, can do much to support our alma mater with heart and hand and in a budgetary sense in a crucial year in the future of private institutions such as Dartmouth.
BEQUEST AND ESTATE PLANNING PROGRAM: Guy A. Swenson Jr., of 9 Capitol Street, Concord, N. H., is the chairman of our class's Bequest and Estate Planning program. He deserves our appreciation for his willingness to continue to serve the Class and the College in this capacity. The Program ended its 20th year in June 1970, and in that span has increased the strength of the College by more than $43 million. It might be well for all of us to give this matter our serious attention, consideration, and action as soon as our individual circumstances permit, if we have not already done so. If any of us has any questions as to how a provision for Dartmouth can help either the College or our personal estate planning objectives Guy stands ready to answer them or help in any way he can.
YEAR MARKED IN EAST BERLIN PRISON: January 4, 1971 marked the end of a year during which Hans Huessy's oldest son, Mark, has been held captive in an East Berlin prison. 42's prayers are that his freedom is imminent.
IS THIS THE SPIRIT OF '42?: We hope it is because in December of 1968 when John Tiernan of Presque Isle lost his business to Are he spent 1969 rebuilding and reorganizing and started all over again. It is individuals with spirit like this that make UP Great Class of 1942!
MORE NOTES ON CLASSMATES: Harry Bartlett recently completed a two-summer program in College Management at the University of Nebraska. His duties at Trinity College in Hartford include long- range planning, personnel and labor negotiations, and general administrative work in the President's office. Robert M. Whelden of Allentown, Pa., is with the Bell and Howell Company serving as resident sales manager of the Ditto Division branch office in Allentown. Ken LaSure spent last year as assistant headmaster of a small private school in Bethesda but missed the classroom too much and has returned to The Sidwell Friends School. Ken says, "... So back to the classroom I go, for the rest of my working life, if you call teaching work." Bill Foster had a great time during the past year "avoiding the market pitfalls and hitting a sales quota on Investment Trusts (mutual funds)." His clients were delighted to see him go on three great free trips, one of which was to Bermuda. Bill Bishop continues with church and educational work and changed his address from New Ross, Nova Scotia to Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 3, 1970. Back "in the good old days" Jim Kellers was the Dartmouth Indian; today he is running an interesting course in archaeology at Drew University where his students "are usually found standing before a drawing board, kneeling beside wet clay, hunched over a camera, or perched on a stool before a microscope" according to the Drew University Magazine. Charlie Brown, ex-class president, has accepted the chairmanship of the Class Projects Committee. Rumor has it that others who have been asked to serve on the committee are: Dick Burns, Guy Swenson, Alex Fanelli, Harry Bond, and AdWinship, all within a very reasonable distance of Hanover. (Final choices for consideration as class projects will be presented to the Executive Committee at the next official meeting in May.) Class President Dick Lippman will serve on the committee, ex-officio.
Guy Swenson and Dick Burns both communicated with your Secretary several weeks ago to inform him that Dr. Paul J. Costello lost his life in an automobile accident on November 18, 1970 in Medford, Mass. The tragedy of Paul's death was compounded by the fact that it apparently resulted from collision with a car, on Interstate 93, operated by a person who was drunk. Paul's car was demolished but his wife, Muriel, seems to be recovering satisfactorily from head injuries sustained in the crash. Paul passed away en route to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford. Paul, a well-known Manchester pediatrician, leaves his wife, two sons, and two daughters. 42's share their grief with the Costello family members and extend sincere sympathy to them on their great loss. (The obituary in a subsequent ALUMNI MAGAZINE will carry further details.)
PARTING SHOTS: Just a reminder about a new wrinkle added for ski buffs ... The First Annual Dartmouth Alumni Ski Weekend ... scheduled for Hanover March 5-7 ... A complete package for lodging at the Hanover Inn on Friday and Saturday nights ... dinner both nights and two days of skiing at the Skiway. The all- inclusive price is $BO per couple with reductions for singles and those requiring only one night's lodging. Individual and group reservations may be made by writing Dennis A. Dinan, 203 Crosby Hall, Hanover, N. H. 03755. This is a great opportunity for some '42 fun, and fellowship with friends in other classes.
Del Worthington '26, president of World of Coins in Tucson, has been given the privilege of distributing the remainder of the Dartmouth Bicentennial Medals. Of a very limited issue of 5000 there are less than 2000 available. These three-inch bronze medals have a striking satin finish. They were authorized by Congress and struck by the U. S. Mint. Alumni are being given the opportunity to purchase for $10 each before Del and his company approach coin and medal collectors who will buy up the remainder in short order. For further details or to order the address is 70 East Alameda, Tucson, Ariz. 85701 (Phone 602- 623-1211). Del also has some ideas as to how the medals may be embedded in clear plastic or mounted in a desk pen set and can take care of such orders at cost.
THE BEST TO ALL OF YOU EACH MORNING, AND EACH DAY, THROUGHOUT THE YEAR 1971!
Secretary, 184 West Clinton Ave. Tenafly, N. J. 07670
Treasurer, 126 Peele Road, Nashua, N. H. 03060
