"Be ever seen and never heard As becomes a little tot, If you're ever heard to be obscene Yours will be a sorry lot."
The above rule was more honored in the breach than in its reach.
October has been a busy, bountiful, beautiful month, brilliant in color predominated by gridiron green among the Ivy. '29 had a most successful and enjoyable fall reunion in Hanover October 10-12. Dartmouth Night festivities in front of Dartmouth Hall preserved old traditions as messages of greeting and fealty from around the girdled earth were read; and new traditions begun in the shape of mini-skirted, megaphone waving, hip swinging girls, who led our cheers and joined our singing. A nostalgic note filled the air on the presentation of PresidentDickey for his 25th appearance on this historic night. His brief, timely and well-chosen words brought forth an ovation from the Dartmouth family all of whom knew that next year another would be in his place.
The evening ended in a blaze of glory as towering flames from the campus bonfire illuminated Baker's Tower crowned by its weather vane figures; and also reflected in the Top of the Hop's tall windows.
Saturday's highlights: 9:00 a.m. Executive Committee Meeting in 101 Parkhurst attended by 13 members; Penn Game with both sun and fortune smiling on The Green completely Blackmanizing the digitless Quakers. 93 members and guests attended the Class Dinner in Hopkins' Alumni Hall at which presentations were made to CarterStrickland and Gene Davis in recognition of their devoted class service and leadership.
Festivities were adjourned to Rm. 19 Shady Lawn where voices and glasses were raised on high in fellowship and harmony recapturing the June night's spell as the same full moon shone brightly down on Indian Summer night.
Among the reunion highlights were the following: Hal Hirsch who crossed the Continent from Portland, Ore., to be with us. Hal reported that Grace Hodson, Jim's widow, suffered a broken arm on Labor Day from which we hope she has recovered; the marriage on Sunday, Oct. 12 in Burlington, Vt., of Jack and Emily Irving's son David '70 to Patricia Aulis of Norwich, Vt.; Russ Goudey's minstrels at Shady Lawn topped by Tom Maynard; Wellesley merchant Nelson Bell and his wife Carolyn, Wellesley professor of economics, gave me news of Bart Stoodley who gave up the law to teach sociology there instead; Alice Monahan reported Bob Jr. in British Columbia operating a large paper mill in Powell River, Danny in West Concord, Mass., Director of Natural Resources and Conservation and daughter Linda Dresch, wife of a Coast Guard Officer living in Cheboygan, Mich.; AL Cooley, retired from Buffalo and business, now relaxing on his farm in Vt. For the Jaquiths, an extra dividend of joy and gladness came from watching our grandchildren Jeff and Susie LeSueur on their first Hanover visit and their enthusiastic reaction and most hospitable reception from the Class.
Larry Lougee has sent in the exciting news of a new addition to his family - berthed at Moosehead Lake and christened "29 Up" — he hopes this will bring back happy memories to his neighbors Nat andBillie Barrows and Chris and Jane Born. H., Dudley W.Orr, vice-president and chairman Trust Investment Committee; also a Boston newspaper's account of Dudley's prominent participation in a N. H. real estate conservation development.
The N. Y. Tim'es on Oct. 29 has a review of the revival of Charley Gaynor's musical "Lend An Ear" which ran on Broadway for 460 performances in 1948 "and made a star out of Carol Channing."
'29 has the unique distinction of having two class chairmen in one family, DukeBarto and son, John, who was elected to head '52. Your secretary is happy to announce the appointment of Hank Stein as assistant secretary by the executive committee. Hank's address is 43 Somerset Road, Brookline, Mass. 02146.
