Congratulations to Dud Orr for receiving the Dartmouth Alumni Award from the Alumni Council - as reported in the February issue. Dud's long and able service as a Trustee of the College has won this deserved recognition.
Dave Martin, serving his seventh term in the House of Representatives from Nebraska's Third District, has announced that he will retire to his home in Kearney when the term ends in December. Dave, who is now the ranking Republican member of the influential House Rules Committee, said that he and Tancie look forward to taking it easier, with more time to devote to children and grandchildren. He served on the Republican National Committee in the 1950's and expects to continue his interest in the party.
From Pittsburgh comes the news that PorterKeir is serving as secretary of the alumni club, after having held every other office in the organization. He has been retired for some years from his insurance brokerage firm.
Ed Felch ended his career of 44 years with the Bell System when he retired in November. His Dartmouth A.B. in physics served the nation well, since he spent the war years in charge of the engineering work for magnetic airborne submarine detectors. This led to the first practical airborne magnetometer for geophysical exploration. Later Ed was responsible for developing and operating guidance equipment for TITAN I and many space vehicles. In 1963 he received the Commander's Award of the Air Force for his contributions to the guided missile effort. For a time he was director of the Safeguard Missiles Laboratory in New Jersey and then moved to the post from which he retired, director of Bell Labs Kwajalein Field Station in the Marshall Islands. He holds more than 20 patents and has written many technical papers. Ed has retired to Chatham, N.J., and will also spend some time at his home in Lake Shehawkin, Pa.
Allen Benjamin's widow Meta sent New Year's greetings and reported that son John and family are now at Yale and daughter Betty Anne and her family are in Oak Park, Ill. Each has two young children.
Jack Dearth reports that he has retired from the history staff of Slippery Rock State College (where Slippery Rock Creek wanders - but not the minds of the professors). Thus his efforts to convert "Old S.R." (otherwise known as "The Rock") into "The Dartmouth of Western Pennsylvania" came to an end. All in all, Jack feels that his 11 years at S.R. were glorious, but they were saddened by the early loss of his wife, Millicent. He has retired to Pomona, Calif., in the shadow of Old Baldy (San Antonio Peak) where he has found a delightful haven called Mt. San Antonio Gardens, already discovered by other grateful Dartmouth men - he'll be glad to send brochures on request.
Ed Merkel spends his summers in Vermont and frequently sees the Cooleys; during the rest of the year he is back home in Cincinnati, where he sees the Greg Wrights.
Ed Walsh, retired from the American Can Co., is still active in "Keep America Beautiful;" this program is financed entirely by industry and works through an advisory council of 100 civic organizations to fight litter and blight. Recently John and Loria Bryant of Spartanburg, S.C., visited Ed and Buddy, and were joined by Dukeand Horty Barto for a mini-reunion. John has fully recovered from the open-heart surgery he had several years ago.
The "Mr. Lumberman" award for 1973 was recently presented to Brett Sine at the annual dinner of .the Western Retailers Lumberman's Association in Calgary, and his wife Elspeth received a bouquet of roses. The award recognized Brett's long-term influence in the retail lumber business in Alberta, and his many professional and civic activities in Edmonton and Calgary, He has served as president and board chairman of WRLA and has also been active in the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the Philharmonic Society.
For any cynic who despairs of the future of large urban centers, I can recommend a visit to Calgary and Edmonton - both clean, modern, progressive cities of about a half a million - and only a few hours away from superb skiing on the rooftop of the Canadian Rockies.
