The October 31 Class Newsletter furnished an excellent preview of what is in store for us at our terrific twentieth reunion. That data well summarized the main item on the agenda of the class executive committee meeting which was held in Hanover on October 11, with the exception that the Secretary's minutes show that Nev Chamberlain is chairman of the dinner committee - at least that is his primary responsibility - and any added duties such as leading a three-mile jog on Sunday morning as chairman of the physical fitness committee is a collateral assignment. Come to think of it though, possibly Joe Medlicott tried to pen his memories of what transpired at the Hanover committee meeting at the subsequent tailgating session down on Chase Field, and got grog mixed up with jog. However, if reunion chairman Gerry Sarno makes Nev live up to his advance billing, it looks to me that Nev is in excellent shape to lead the troops over the hill and dale, with Messr. Medlicott as co-leader and others such as John Dwyer and Rick Miller being fully capable of seeing that the pace would do credit to a cross-country team.
Well, I've already mentioned five names of individuals who were at the Hanover session, which actually was a combination of executive committee and reunion committee personnel, plus our genial host for the meeting, Jim Stevens. The others present were Frank Harrington, Charlie Gardner, Bill Embree, Newc Eldredge, Bob Kilmarx, Joel Leavitt, Frank Dickinson, Jim Lyons, Kim Swezey, and myself.
Chairman Dwyer called the meeting to order, and after those present kindly condescended to accept the Secretary's minutes of the 1968 meeting, Treasurer Miller took the floor to report that the class income for 1968-69 was $2,737.00, while general expenses including the ALUMNI MAGAZINE totalled $2,612.33, leaving a net income of $124.67.
Our treasurer also turned over to the College $1,500 representing the funding of the second phase of the Class Tree Program. Newc Eldredge reported that these funds provided for the planting of nine large maples on the campus.
Prior to the report of the reunion committee, Frank Harrington was appointed chairman of the nominating committee which will be involved in lining up a proposed slate of class officials for the 1970-75 term. (Frank was about to head for Europe as a representative of the Massachusetts Port Authority, but he and Sally came north for the weekend, which included a delightful brunch at their cottage in New London on Sunday for all those who stayed at the Slope 'n Shore Lodge, which was the weekend headquarters for the group. Incidentally, the Harringtons recently took occupancy of their new home on Possum Lane, Weston, Mass. 02193.)
Gerry Sarno's reunion report involved some ten major items, including the "alumni college" type day which will precede the customary reunion activities, the financial aspect (which Jim Lyons is endeavoring to keep at a reasonable level by such things as having an orchestra hired jointly by three reuning classes for the Saturday evening dance), and the college-run program for the children ... attendance by all ages of our offspring definitely is encouraged.
As mentioned above, there was "tailgating" following the meeting, after which we took considerable pleasure in seeing the Big Green best the Pennsylvania forces 41-0; it was another contest, however, where the opposition took the field minus some key players. Since then the Big Green has continued to muster its might against all opponents, but Yale did show that an aerial attack could be effected and our local sportswriters seem to think that Princeton will be able to effect one which will produce a Tiger victory even though with but three games to go Dartmouth appears to be developing one of its finest football records.
While meeting with Brian's teacher at school today, I chanced to see the September 1969 copy of "Vermont Academy Life," in which the appointment of Bill Dey as assistant headmaster of that Saxtons River, Vt., preparatory school was announced. I'm sure that Bill, as well as headmaster Mike Choukas '51 and ski coach Warren Olivers '38 would enjoy a visit from you; the town is just north of Bellows Falls, so is but a short distance off 1-91.
