"I'm old but I'm awfully tough"words of an old song of long ago but brought to mind by Thayer Smith's message on his Christmas card: "Have just returned from a drive to the West Coast and back to inspect my three boys out there. I was very lucky on weather as I encountered no snow except a few patches at the side of the road in the high Arizona passes. My son, Peter, has just taken his son Peter Jr. up to Hanover for an interview with the Director of Admissions. Hope he gets in, to keep up the Dartmouth tradition in the family." It's not only the thousands of miles of solo driving but it's a long time between gas, water, and air stations when one travels "on the lone prairie." We have to chalk up a good high mark for Thayer.
Our Tenner holiday chapter would not be complete if we had no "lines" contributed by Billy Williams: "This blessed, this inspiring day - its wonders never end: This perfect day to tell you clear You are our wellloved friend. We tell you nowwe always will. A joyous Christmas! Bea and Bill."
Reading about all the roughhouse on college campuses over the land prompted ChadChadbourne to come up with a suggestion based upon "the good old days": "As I remember it, some of these academic hot shots of our day were cooled off in the horsewatering trough at the corner of the campus. Maybe the method would still be possible. With a bit of ice on the water! These San Francisco rioters disturb us all in these parts." In this connection, we pause to ask "Do You Remember When"after the sophomore egg barrage in the Bema following our class photo, Tobe led a group to Thornton Hall where the culprits of '09 were caught and led to that well-known corner of the campus in the not-cold enough water in the trough?
We thought the captain of the basketball team of '06-'07, Greb Grebenstein, ought to get a chuckle out of our Greeting Card, so we sent one to him. He liked it and was pleased to recall the many Tenners he remembered. He wrote: "Your 'Greetings' to Tenners of Dartmouth card is marvelous. If you have any extras, I'd love to have them." We had a good over-run from the printer so we were glad to pass some extras on to Greb.
The many cards "Greetings" received from classmates make the sun to shine regardless of clouds, snow, rain, sleet, etc. They are much appreciated. Some of the messages: (from Pineo Jackson) "I certainly hope this finds you in health and well-being. Disturbing news seems to pervade communications coming from Hanover. Let us hope a steady influence will emerge and prevail over the reactionary minority. The mag was certainly filled with pro and con letters to the Editor on the commencement address to the extent they became boresome to me at least." (from Art Allen) "Late with cards this year, had a bout with the flu, and just well enough to write a few cards." (from Mac Kendall) "We had a Dartmouth party two weeks ago. 1910 represented by LarryBankart, Andy Scarlett, Art Lord, KenPhelps, and myself. How about that?" (from Art Lord) "Our best wishes to you for a Merry Christmas in the midst of your family. How far away and how different the world here seems from the Christmases we have known. But it is pleasant and we like it. It is nice to have some good Tenners and other Dartmouth friends nearby whom we see frequently, and with my sister and many Chase cousins here we feel quite at home. A Happy New Year to you with twelve good months to follow."
(From Ned Loveland) "It is fine that the remaining 1910 class remains so well informed of their classmates through the efforts of you and other officers." (from PaulAlbert) "We sure had nice visits back in the days when you stopped off in Chicago. Wish you could make it out here on your next trip West." (referring to an enclosed souvenir postcard, from Bill Taylor) "It does not seem to me that our graphic arts people do as good a publicity job as they might. Otherwise I would entice you with a Florida Christmas card." (from Ray Seymour) "We both sincerely hope you are entirely OK now and we enjoy your Tenner Topics and Class News in the MAGAZINEimmensely." (from Brown Cooper) "I enjoy very much your column in the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE. YOU are doing a wonderful job. We expect to see you in Hanover in June, 1970." (from Heinie Reed) "Another Christmas, another greeting, with every good wish for the coming year."
Are we all planning on June 13, 14, 15 for our informal reunion combined with the big eventtwo hundredth anniversary of the College?
