Not since the 1958-59 season when Dartmouth finished with a 7-4 record has the Green squash team had a winning record, but a victory in either of the remaining matches with Rochester and Princeton will boost the Indians, now 6-5, to their best record in a decade. A fine 5-4 victory at Cornell gave Coach John Kenfield's squad its initial Ivy League win of the season and turned the record to the plus side. The Indians have won five of seven non-league matches.
Junior Geoff Scott at No. 1 has begun to hit the stride that brought him a fifth-place rank in the national ratings a year ago. Behind him, sophomores Jim Smith, Dave Miskell, and Justin Stanley along with Captain Pete Anderson and senior Gerry Hills have produced consistent displays on the court which give Kenfield cause for optimistic thoughts about restoring Dartmouth squash to prominence.
In track, the Indians are also performing beyond expectations, compiling a 4-4 record on the eve of the indoor Heptagonal championship meet at Cornell.
Junior weightmen DeWitt Davies and George Remmer have been dominant in their events, with Davies appearing to be ready to overtake George Bixby's 35- pound weight-throw record of 59'5" set in 1957.
High jumper Chet Halka, the College record holder, is rounding into form in that event and has also given the Indians a new source of scoring in the long jump. Vaulters Jeff Blomstedt and Dave Blaser have cleared 14 feet and should improve as the outdoor season approaches.
In the running events, Captain Mark Upton has lowered his time in the 600 to 1:13.1 and has given Dartmouth the lead in every kickoff leg of the mile relay. Miler Mark Hamilton did 4:19.5 against Manhattan.
The Indians have shown their mustard in taking both Princeton and Yale to the final relays before bowing, 57-52 and 60-49.
Dartmouth's varsity wrestlers, crippled by a lack of manpower, have not won in nine matches but the Indian freshman team closed its season with a 6-3 record. Captain Bill Miller came up with a 9-0 record at 152 and 160 pounds, winning six of his matches by pins, and heavyweight Dick Pritchard has a 7-1-1 record and Scott Snyder at 191 is 7-1.
