Bob McKennan will retire at the end of this academic year as Professor of Anthropology after 40 years of teaching at Dartmouth. After graduating cum laude he took postgraduate courses at Harvard and acquired a Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1933. From 1930-34 he was an instructor in Sociology; in 1934 he was made an assistant professor and in 1938 a full professor; in 1954 he became a professor of Anthropology. During this period he held several administrative positions of responsibility. He spent many summers doing archaeological field work, particularly in Alaska, and is the author of many publications arising out of his field experience and studies. At the Greater Boston annual class dinner, held in May, Bob was the honored guest and received a rousing send-off into the realm of retirement.
Ben Werntz and his bride of only a few months, Margo, joined Lon Kimball and Adeline last month for a trip to Austria and a voyage down the Rhine to Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Frank and Ellie Wallis were unable to attend the Greater Boston dinner early in May because they were on the "Delta Queen" going down the Mississippi to New Orleans. They spent a most pleasant winter at Marco Island, Fla., and are planning to return to the same place for three months next year. Ken Nugent is another one of those lucky individuals who spends the winter in Florida. A post card from him at Siesta Key indicated "EddieBurns is just down the beach from us. Blairand Helen Gilbert dropped in one day. They were visiting his brother in Tampa after getting back from a trip to Puerto Rico that he won! Spent a couple of nights with Tubbyand Lamby Washburn."
Brad Kingman, president of the Portsmouth (N. H.) Trust Company since January 1964, was guest of honor at a retirement party held recently at Exeter Inn. LesFrenkel is another retiree, who recently sold out his business (Gersten & Frenkel, security dealers) to J. M. Dryfoos & Co. who have retained him as a financial consultant for the next five years. He and Claudia celebrated the move with a trip to Aruba where they have gone for the past eight years.
On a trip to Latin America this past spring Jane and Al Perkins saw a familiar'face in the hotel bar at Cuzco, Peru. It belonged to Dale Wallace '30, who with wife Marge had attended the famous 1930 class reunion in Caracas, Venezuela. The Wallaces were seeing a bit more of the world south of the border before heading home to Hoopeston, Ill.
The Perkinses also dropped in on Dan Slawson who for many years has lived in a charming home in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Dan has a swimming pool in his patio, and his real-estate office behind his bedroom. He was preparing for an influx of Petrequins and Haffenreffers.
Classmates who are helping to put the Third Century Fund over the top are Charlie Moore, Bill Jenkins, Lon Kimball, BobHardy, and Willard McLaughlin.
As you read these notes, the Alumni Fund drive will be going down the final stretch. If you haven't already done your bit, it will be a great source of satisfaction to George Zahm and the College if you will sit right down and send a check to Hanover without further delay.
With these brief notes your secretary is granted a respite for the next three months. While the job of writing is no hardship, the problem of getting facts about which to write is never-ending. And so - it is with a si oh of relief that we look forward to the summer. We hope it will be accompanied by good health and happiness for everyone.
