Our 60th reunion has passed into history and now to record the highlights. Five classmates and three wives had dinner together at the Inn Thursday evening, June 12 as Edwin D. Martin had flown in from Hollywood Calif., and Dean Francis H. Bird had arrived from Cincinnati, Ohio. Friday morning at breakfast in the Byble and Drum, Dr.Henry E. Meleney was warmly greeted havina arrived by air from Gainesville, Fla., during the night.
Class headquarters were in the lounge of College Hall and registration started around noontime Friday and proceeded at a rapid pace until 23 classmates, 13 wives, 8 widows and 5 relatives were checked in for a grand total of 49. At 5 p.m., the social hour in the lounge began with '09s "Haggerty Twins," Bean Bird and Dr. Reggie Colley, taking' care of the needs of those present. The "evening's dinner was in the Drake Room and 41 enjoyed one of Jim McFate's fine dinners. While dining word was brought to us that Prof. Sidney C. Hazelton was being held in Dick's House for observation after being involved in an automobile accident. Davi E. Orr, assistant to the College Secretary, had assigned James C. Coffey '71 as liaison man to chairman Chester S. Brett and after dinner he escorted members to the reception given by President and Mrs. Dickey at their home. A fine concert by the Glee Club was then enjoyed in Spaulding Auditorium featuring the special Bicentennial Salute.
Saturday morning an impressive memorial service was held in the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College under the direction of Rev. Hollis M. Bartlett and Rev. Wilbur I.Bull with Bartlett speaking on "Thoughts from the Present and Other Years." There were 254 names of those that have gone before on the insert to the program.
After the Class picture was taken on the steps of College Hall, we proceeded to the Bicentennial Convocation Luncheon in Alumni Hall where honored guests were the Earl of Dartmouth and the Countess of Dartmouth. The address for the fifty year Class was given by Robert M. Stecher '19. President John S. Dickey '29 gave one of his thought-provoking addresses.
Ceremonies opening the Bicentennial Year were held in front of Hopkins Center at 4 p.m.
At 5:00 p.m. our second social hour was enjoyed and a class meeting held. Reports of various officers were received and approved. Present officers were re-elected with vacancies being filled by Vice President A. Gordon Weinz and Executive Committeemen Dean Francis H. Bird and Dr. Clarence E. Dunbar. At the conclusion of the meeting, President Clark asked the secretary-treasurer to stand and in behalf of those present presented him a Dartmouth Chair with suitably inscribed plate in appreciation of his service to the Class over the past years. He could only inadequately express his appreciation but thinks it one of the finest gifts that he has ever received.
Saturday night dinner was held in the Hovey Grill and attended by 48. After dinner, we adjourned to the Lounge where pictures of past reunions were shown and Ed Martin explained slides taken on his recent trip to Africa.
Sunday was cloudy but Commencement exercises were started in front of Baker Library. There were over 100 in the proces- sion who had been out 50 years or more with '09 furnishing 15. At the conclusion of the Valedictory, the rains came and adjournment taken to Leverone Field House where the exercises were completed.
It was then back to College Hall where box lunches were distributed and farewells said. As has been the custom over past years, Cloudcroft, home of Wilbur andAnna Bull, had special meaning for 1909 as they were having open house in honor of their Golden Wedding Anniversary on June 17.
As the reunion came to a close 57 01 tne Class are recorded as living.
Two of 1899's three living members, Kenneth Beal (standing) and Hawley Chase,were back, 70 years after graduation.
