Before you receive this, the first term for the new M.D. candidates will be over and they will already feel well on the way towards their goal. Meanwhile, it is most interesting to note that more applications for the 1971 entering class have been received than the total for the entire 1970 application period.
Several years ago this writer had the extreme pleasure of being privileged to describe Frederic P. Lord as the Complete Man at a meeting of a large group of DMS alumni who had returned to Hanover to honor this grand gentleman. Today it is with an equal degree of sorrow that we must write you of his death on October 30. For those of us who enjoyed being associated with this superlative teacher during his 1911-1947 tenure, his death creates a real void. Truly his many good works entitle him to Well done, good and faithful servant."
All DMS alumni who were here between 1943 and 1970 will be sorry to hear of the recent death of Eleanor Hoag. During those 27 years her kindly assistance to all students m the field of microbiology was of inestimable value. She will be sadly missed, by students and faculty alike.
Incidental Intelligence—Whereas we missed Howie Pearson M'52 during his Hanover visit, we were pleased to learn that, after six years in Florida, he has returned to New England to serve as Professor of Pediatrics at Yale. . . . Speaking of faculty appointments, did you know that BarrySmith M'60 has returned to Hanover in the Ob-Gyn department to bolster Ted HarrisM'60 who was already here in the Department of Medicine. . . . HaroldHawkins M'64 recently breezed through too rapidly to be seen, but promised to return. . . . The John McGowan's M'6s are celebrating the arrival of Angela Kay on September 6. . . . Steve Sherman M'66 and Gale Whittelsey took their vows in mid-August with Garth Gregory M'66, JackLivingston M'66 and Deane Mosher M'66 present to keep things honest. . . . Another visitor we missed was Dick Horner M'67 who is doing duty as a first-year medical resident at the Brigham in Boston.
