A communique signed "a friend of Dartmouth, passing through Sarasota" (on December 27), enclosed a clipping from that city's Herald-Tribune about a one-time friend of Laurie Herman's. Right; featured in the item was Dr. Perry Gilbert, recipient of a 14-foot, tri-hull fiberglass boat for use in the Mote Marine Laboratory's "longterm study of the ecology of the Charlotte Harbor estuary." The boat was the gift of Bay Marine Plastics of Sarasota. Perry is executive director of the laboratory, situated on Siesta Key.
A thousand miles or so to the north, EdBrown came through with a message from George Engel, M.D. Writes George: "On sabbatical leave for the year, writing, pursuing research, and visiting various medical schools as lecturer and visiting professor. So far have been to Queen's University (Canada), McGill, Iowa, Michigan, Duke, and University of Virginia. Later in year will be at Toronto, Western Ontario, Massachusetts General Hospital, and finally at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, for a stint as visiting professor."
And from the Alumni Records Office comes word on Carl Hess, who (as already reported by "Scoop" Scherman) has become president and chief executive officer of the recently organized American European Associates, Inc., an international investment firm.
Regrettably, the only other news this time is truly sad - to record the passing of one-time classmate Alvin L. Newbury, in Dallas, on February 6, 1969; of Dr. RichardP. Bell Jr. in Staunton, Va., on June 14, 1969; and of Dr. Joseph Robinson in Hartford, Conn., on September 17, 1969. To their families, we extend our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of men who meant much to all of us. We extend our condolences also to Irv Diamond on the death, on October 25, 1969, of his wife, Doris.
