A scarcity of news this month gives me an opportunity to talk about two local alumni who are making it big in the ski wear business. Though neither was born or raised in this area, they met at Tuck and have now migrated to the North Country where they operate a booming ski clothing manufacturing operation in Lebanon. Frederick T. Bedford III T'61, Chairman, and Stephen W. Crisafulli T'62, Executive Vice President, control the century-old Carter & Churchill Co., Inc., the oldest manufacturer of ski clothing in the country. Turning out over 150 different styles of ski parkas and ski pants, the company features the names "Profile" and "Slalom" which may not be the most widely known names in ski wear at this time, but may make it before too long.
Both men worked in New York for several years after graduation from Tuck but, sensing a continuing increase in both consumer income and leisure time and the exceptionally bright industry potential of Carter & Churchill, they acquired the majority of stock in this company in January 1967 and since then have more than doubled sales and profits.
In addition to moving into a more efficient manufacturing facility, the company has acquired a competitive manufacturer and retail outlets at several ski resorts. The latest move by Bedford and Crisafulli tapped into another leisure time market. Moving outside the apparel field, they have announced the acquisition of North American Metals Corporation, a small manufacturer of golf clubs and track and field equipment. It is a pleasure for those of us at the Tuck School to follow the growth and success of these men right here in our neighborhood.
Peter J. Meehan T'66 has been appointed division controller of the manufacturing and engineering division of Corning Glass Works. Peter joined Corning following graduation and has been a financial analyst and a department foreman prior to his new appoint- ment. E.V. Kirouac T'26 has come out of his previously announced retirement to become sales manager of Computer Resources of New York city. He was formerly with the National Shawmut Bank and the Burroughs Corporation. Stuart R. Spitz T'68 has returned to Weis, Voisin, Cannon, Inc. as vice president in charge of institutional services after a brief stint with Calibre Industries. He has also been elected president of their largest subsidiary corporation, W.V.C. Asset Management Corporation.
Having had the pleasure of dining at the Pen & Pencil Steakhouse in New York on several occasions, I am delighted to make note of a recent article raving about this superb steakhouse owned by John Bruno T'65. Taking over from his famous dad upon graduation from Tuck, the younger John Bruno has carried on the traditions and the quality of this restaurant which was founded in 1937, and has added quantitive methods to the operation of a specialized eating establishment. Be that as it may, I am sure that John's success rests mainly on his ability to select prime beef for his patrons, an ability that was inherited from his father.
In addition to running one of the world's great restaurants, John is a pilot, ardent sailing expert and sports car driver and hunter. He speaks before culinary societies and teaches economics and advertising at a local business school. He describes the gentle art of restaurant management as "the art of making sure patrons won't whine about the beef or beef about the wine."
Willis M. Partridge T'48 writes that he has become associated with Capitol Funding Corp. of San Francisco as division manager for the Boston area. Bill was with Massachusetts General Life Insurance Co. until recently. Lawrence W. Hampton T'59 has been transferred to the London office of Glendinning Associates. Larry's assignment will be to build up the European marketing consulting business and he expects to be in the London office for a period of two years.
The news was spotty this month. Either our news service is asleep or Tuck men aren't making the news - and I certainly don't believe the latter. Help me out by sending in word of promotions, moves, etc. Your friends, as well as we, would like to hear from you.
LAST MINUTE FLASH. Tuck Alumni Association of Chicago meets on Tuesday evening, March 31. Details by letter soon.
Best regards from the hills.
