Renold Thompson was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Lubrizol Corporation, the well-known Cleveland company which is seriously engaged in various pollution fields. Renold and his wife Shirley and their three children live in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He is a vice president of Oglebay Norton Company and general manager of its Ferro Engineering Division.
From Providence comes news of DonBarr who was recently promoted to trust officer of the Rhode Island Hospital National Bank. Don has been with the bank since 1950 following graduation from Boston University Law School. He is treasurer of the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association, a member of the Finance Advisory Board of Swansea (R. I.) and treasurer of the Rhode Island Dartmouth alumni association.
Dave Weld continues to receive additional recognition for his outstanding marketing excellence in the wholesale lumber field. He was one of relatively few who were recently honored by the National American Wholesale Lumber Association as a recipient of a 1969 marketing excellence award. As you know, he is a senior vice president of Lawrence R. McCoy Co., inc. of Worcester, Mass., and is responsible for the company's operations for the State of New Jersey.
Thaddeus Bell, an original member of the class, was honored last year by the American Society of Naval Engineers as the recipient of its Solburg Award. He is head of the Systems Analysis Staff of the Navy's underwater sound laboratory in New London (Conn.). This honor is given annually to a U. S. citizen who has made the most significant contribution to Naval Engineering in the fields of research and development. The basis for Thad's award was his research efforts which began in 1955 and resulting in the basic design of a new sonar, the AN/SQS-26 used in the detection of submarines in the ocean environment. Thad transferred to Yale in the V-12 days and received his Bachelor of Science in physics. At the end of the war he requested a similar degree from Dartmouth, but the record indicates that the then administration did not take any action. However, once a classmate, always a classmate, and we certainly hope that his interest in the college and the class will continue despite his Yale affiliations.
As the year ends, may I thank those who have sent me news and have helped to make the interesting job of class secretary somewhat easier.
