The concept of spring as nature's annual awakening (or reawakening) is familiar to all of us. Many writers, poets, and artists have depicted spring as the beginning or rebirth period of the twelve-month cycle by which we live. The spring of 1970 has witnessed another rebirth - at least I feel confident that some recent omens give strong indications of '65's renaissance as a thriving member of the Dartmouth alumni family. After five years of stagnation we've begun to move, and though this movement is only slight I think it bodes well for the future.

John Richardson's enthusiasm has permeated our Alumni Fund organization so that we are presently not only making the best showing ever for our class, but are also leading all classes in the 1963-'69 group in this spring's drive. More importantly, John's personal contact with many of you has elicited numerous letters, notes, etc. You are beginning to volunteer to be assistant class agents to solicit your classmates for Dartmouth, and to write to me with news of yourselves, your families, and your '65 friends. There is real feeling among the men charged by you with running class business that the ball is rolling and is being pushed harder and faster by many of you. Bravo! Push harder, we want your suggestions, your ideas about possible class functions and projects, and your support financially and spiritually for Dartmouth and for the Class of 1965.

On the first weekend in May several of the elected leaders of '65 gathered in Hanover for Class Officers Weekend. We had a good opportunity then to set some goals and to outline the procedures for attaining them. We're anxious to take advantage of and sustain this new class enthusiasm. Rich Beams, our reunion chairman, is finalizing arrangements for an informal gathering in Hanover next fall after the Princeton game. Plans now call for 'tails and perhaps dinner, depending upon your response. We realize that many classmates return to Hanover for at least one game each fall, and we hope that by encouraging everyone to focus on a particular weekend we can make the outing more fun for everyone. Get in touch with Rich at Suffield Academy in Suffield, Conn., if you'd like to help out with the planning or if you want to be sure he knows you're coming.

As I've said, there's been plenty in the mailbag in the past few weeks, and I'm grateful to all of you who have written. I hope that more of you will find the time to be in touch during the next few months.

Derek Knudsen writes that he and his bride of September, the former Miss Sharon Clifford, are happily settled in San Francisco where he is associated with the law offices of Valentine Brookes. Derek is a graduate of Tuck School ('66) and Harvard Law ('69).

On the medical front Steve Le Sauvage, formerly Satyr, will be a surgical intern at the Presbyterian-University Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh after he graduates from med school in June. He and Joan are currently living in Brooklyn while he studies at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He hopes for a career in plastic surgery.

Kris and Joan Greene have shunned the Zero Population movement by bringing Peter, their first, into the world on March 28. Kris graduated from Penn Med last June and is interning at the San Diego Naval Hospital. He plans to go into submarine medicine early next year.

American coin-collectors are benefiting from the expertise of Eric Engstrom, as numerous articles by him have appeared in various numismatic publications during the past year. Some of his writings have very esoteric titles, but he obviously knows his subject, as he was honored with the American Numismatic Association's Heath Literary Award Medal in 1968. Coins are just Eric's hobby, though, and the law and Uncle Sam have first dibs on his services. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School last year and practiced with Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood in NYC until the first part of this year when he went on active duty with the Army.

In Chicago Mike Zook was recently promoted by the board of directors of the Northern Trust Bank to the position of second vice president. He is assigned to the bank and corporate services division of the banking department. A native of Illinois, he headed home right after graduation and joined Northern Trust. He and his wife Sara seem to enjoy city living and continue to live at 2336 North Commonwealth Avenue in Chicago.

Harry Margolin is making a name for himself in New York VISTA and legal circles. With a Harvard Law degree already in his portfolio, he's studying in NYU's master's program in urban and poverty law, and he and a. fellow graduate student are preparing to take court action against some of New York City's welfare laws. Harry has done his homework on the NYC welfare system as a VISTA legal volunteer on the west side. He and his colleague will maintain in their court briefs that the city's welfare program violates both the Constitution and the Social Security Act, the nation's basic welfare statutes.

Ward Hindman writes that he is a lieutenant in the Air Force, headed for a year's duty in Thailand. He's a pilot with a tactical fighter wing and has just completed F-105 training at McConnell AFB in Kansas. The Air Force has been home since he graduated from Thayer School (B.E.) in 1968.

Ken Behar, who will graduate from B.U. Law School this month, has married Miss Linda Liu of Orinda, Calif. She is a Rad-cliffe grad. Ken will clerk for the Massachusetts Superior Court next year, and home will be in Brighton.

Again, on the basis of our early performance the outlook for our part in the '70 Alumni Fund is encouraging, but we cannot reach our goals of new class records in both participation and dollars unless each of us does his share. Jump on the bandwagon now with a contribution to the '70 Alumni Fund.

I hope the summer months, vacations, etc., will enable you to see many of your classmates and other Dartmouth friends.

Have a happy summer.

Air Force pilot Ward Hindman '65 off toThailand with a tactical fighter wing.
