Suntanned, windblown—my bride and I were at last alone (feeling, - far above par) when I exclaimed aloud, "Oh, how lucky we are! The '64 column is due."
Undaunted by the harsh exigencies of the deadline, I carefully explained to my new wife why we had to spend an afternoon of our honeymoon writing this column. It would all be worth it, I assured her, when cards and letters with news about '64s begin to pour in from all over the world. Please help save my marriage by jotting down some news about yourself or other '64s and sending it to me as soon as possible. News from other friendly sources such as wives, sweethearts, families, and secretaries will be appreciated also.
Steve Bachman writes that he is now at work as a controller for a corrugated box plant near Philadelphia. Soon after Steve finished his MBA at B. U. last May, his wife Carol presented him with their second daughter, Sarah Louise. Steve laments that "the local beer barely beats Narragansett in quality, and dumpy bars and pool halls in my area are hard to find." The insights of that great Guru of the City of Brotherly Love, W. C. Fields, ring ever true for Steve.
Phil Corsi's lovely wife, Jean, writes that the Corsis are living on their 85-acre farm on Prince Edward Island. Having temporarily put aside his work in psychology, Phil is building a house and tending the garden and orchard with an extended family/community of about ten people who work the land and preserve its diversity and bounty. Sounds pretty idyllic to me, and I can't wait to drop in for an apple.
Shaker Savings Association of Shaker Heights, Ohio, has announced the appointment of Ken Lapine as Vice President and Secretary. He joined Shaker Savings as staff counsel in July of this year. Ken went on from the College to receive his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1967 and since then he's been an associate attorney with Squire, Sanders and Dempsey. He is also a member of the Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations. Ken and Hallie live in Shaker Heights with two children, one named Melissa (and the second name unfortunately unknown by me).
Wah Hoo Wahs are in order for several '64s. Bud McGrath is the honored recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin. Bud's dissertation is entitled "W. B. Yeats and the Heritage of Walter Pater," and he has graciously declined my offer to lend him my complete set of Comp. Lit. notes in order to lighten his burden. Herb West, where is thy sting?
G. Brewster Cole, an account executive with Johnson and Higgins, a New York insurance brokerage firm, has been elected President of the Montclair, N. J., Jaycees. Richard Temple, currently a Captain in the Air Force attached to the Tactical Air Command at Topeka, Kansas, was recently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for "extraordinary aerial achievement in Viet Nam."
Howie Day was awarded a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences at Brown University in June. Howie and his wife Johanna spent last year in Norman, Oklahoma, where Howie served as Assistant Professor of Geology at the University of Oklahoma. There is now a kernel of truth to the rumor that Howie has rocks in his head.
Al Gruber has been named Director of Admissions and Student Financial Aid at Mohegan Community College.
Jay Evans wrote a nice letter to announce his engagement to Hasty Wendell, to whom Jay is probably wed by now. Hasty is a graduate student in geography at B. U., and the Evans will be living in Boston on the corner of Revere and Charles. Jay is working in the Bond and Stock Department of John Hancock with RogerNastau and Fred Roberts.
Bob Field is scheduled to marry Elizabeth Hoopes this fall. Elizabeth is a senior trust administrative assistant at the First National Bank of Boston. "Oar" is planning a honeymoon in Ireland and writes that "the last of the Wales Tails Executive Committee on Female Relations has met his appropriate demise." I couldn't have said it better, Oar.
Art Simington is my odds-on choice to rebuild the shattered command bunker at Bachelor Central, and relay news of '64 bachelors to this column. Art is now a General Medical Officer at Marine Corps HQ in Washington, and is enjoying life as a Navy doctor. Art may be reached, for "wedding-crisis counseling," at 1880 Columbia Road, NW (#104) in Washington.
Well that's about it for now. Please write and let us know how you're getting on. Later.
