With such a winter as most of us have experienced, can spring be far behind? As we pen the April column it is hard to realize that only two more remain to be written prior to the summer "break." Much appreciation is extended to those classmates who have provided interesting items "which have kept us alive" from month to month during these last two years.

Thoughts of Spring: A recent announcement and picture from the Canal Zone conjure up additional thoughts of spring. ... Frank Malavasic and his wife, Marion, proudly display the "Order of the Royal Palm" award after presentation at their home by the Post Commander for having the most beautiful quarters and landscaping where they reside at Curundu Heights (C.Z.). This is their second consecutive award. Frank, you may recall, is the administrative officer for the U.S. Army Maintenance Management Office there. They have a son, Marc, 13.

Spring holds in store a June wedding for the son of former '42 Irenee du Pont Jr. of Montchanin. The future bridegroom is Irenee du Pont 3rd and his fiancee is Miss Eugenie Catherine Collison of Wilmington. Irenee 3rd is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Irenee du Pont of Wilmington and the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nathaniel Batchelder of Hanover, New Hampshire. He attends M.I.T.

Room at the Top: Robert J. StrasenburghII has found that there are still rungs at the top of the ladder.... Wallace and Tiernan has announced his promotion from president to chairman of the board of Stransenburgh Laboratories, Wallace and Tiernan's Rochester subsidiary. Bob continues as chief executive officer.

Eastman Birkett, a partner in the New York law firm of Simpson, Thacher, and Bartlett has been appointed first deputy county executive by County Exec Eugene H. Nickerson according to an announcement out of Long Island. "Easty Doughboy" succeeds Dan Sweeney in the post, who left to become president of the Mitchel Field Development Corporation. "East" is a former Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from both Dartmouth and Harvard Law. Nickerson, in making the announcement said he was pleased to obtain as his first deputy "an outstanding attorney who has been deeply concerned and involved in the problems facing local government in such fields as health, fiscal affairs, civil rights, and federal relationships." He assumed his new post on February 24.

Incidentally, another '42er who is an attorney, namely Richard C. Duncan, has been awarded a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation for 20 years of uncompensated service as a member of Local Draft Board 10 (N. H.) of the Selective Service System. Dick was also Dartmouth and Harvard Law. He has practiced law in Newport (N. H.) for 20 years as a member of the firm of Shulins and Duncan. He spent two of those years in the Attorney General's office in Concord, served as Sullivan County solicitor and commissioner, is a trustee of Newport Hospital and a director of the Citizens National Bank of Newport.

Short Shots: Ernest D. Grinnell Jr. has been named vice president, traffic and indus trial development, of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company.

The Dartmouth basketball team has two consecutive wins over Brown and Yale. Its over-all win record is in double figures. Things are looking up ... hooray!

At our ages if you want to help to assure longevity don't shovel snow! ... Instead, sit down and write out a check to the Alumni Fund ... also don't get more than seven or eight hours' sleep a night ... stay up and ponder how much you can afford to give to the Third Century Fund to assure future greatness for our great and beloved institution. Wah-hoo-wah!
