It was especially appropriate that Dartmouth chose to title its major booklet outlining the goals, components and aspirations for our Third Century Fund Capital Campaign from one of the poems of Dartmouth's Robert Frost '96.

Ever since its frontier founding some 200 years ago Dartmouth has consistently followed "the road less traveled by." We have been unique and independent, daring to innovate, to explore and to lead. This has been possible because we have been and are a private institution. Most importantly we have had, to a degree unique among all colleges and universities, the unbounded devotion, loyalty, services and support of our alumni.

This report on the successful outcome of Dartmouth's Third Century Fund, culminating the College's Bicentennial, provides yet another example of the caring and concern which Dartmouth men, their families and many private foundations, corporations and friends hold for this College. We are deeply grateful for this generosity. I pledge that Dartmouth will strive to be worthy of such giving, that these resources will enable us to continue to innovate, to dare and to lead.

The concluding line from Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken" reads, "and that has made all the difference." I would like to paraphrase it by saying from the heart "and you have made all the difference."
