Correction Department: The first paragraph of our January Notes got scalped. Its last sentence should have read: "Eleazar Wheelock was the son of Deacon Ralph Wheelock (1682-1748) and his first wife Ruth Huntington; Mary was the daughter of the same Ralph Wheelock and his second wife, Mercy Standish." ... Thanks to Mrs. Allard of the Dean's Office, the uncertainties in our January paragraph on fraternities of our time have been resolved as follows: The Cosmos Club, established in 1915, achieved full fraternity status in 1920; and in 1922 it adopted the name Sigma Tau Omega. In 1924 this local was formally installed as a chapter of Alpha Tau Omega, which dissolved in 1936. ... Alpha Delta Phi's Dartmouth chapter in 1969 became the local Alpha Delta ... Delta Kappa Epsilon's Pi chapter in 1970 became Storrs House (local).
Charley Jones, wrote his brother Wes '20 from Palm Beach in early December, "is doing very well. We get to Lake Worth pier every Thursday and Sunday to watch the ocean and the swimmers, and let Charley count the bikinis. To date we have not missed once because of bad weather (Florida adv.) ... Last Sunday he sat on the pier in a Yale blue golf cap, a Harvard red sweater (to ward off the hot sun's rays!) and dark glasses. He looked like a trans-Atlantic tourist sitting on deck."
Dick and Violet Ellis' Golden Wedding anniversary on November 24 was marked by phone calls and flowers pending holidays that will let the whole family meet. Charlotte and her teacher husband and two small boys now live on Long Island; Son Dick '51 and Annapolis '55, now a commander in the Navy and teaching at the Armed Services Staff College at Norfolk, Va., lives there with his wife and two daughters.
Our long silent James Elmer (Gus)Harrington died at Littleton, N. H., Hospital on November 20 after a long illness. The local paper paid a tribute to him as a prominent citizen who served Bethlehem as a high school principal or school board member for some 30 years, as village commissioner for 34 years, and latterly as justice of the Municipal Court for 32 years. Additionally he long owned and operated the Upland Terrace Hotel. But somehow we lost him.
We also regret to report the death in November of Nat Harris' widow, Cassa Lou. Her passing must have been a severe loss to Mobile. Ever since she and Nat were married and moved there in the early '40s, she was a leader in an extraordinary number of causes including church and women's work, community service, both the Children's Theater and the Joe Jefferson Players, the YWCA, Red Cross, and Goodwill Industries. Two stepsons—Nathaniel P. of Atlanta and Charles P. of St. Petersburg—survive her.
Frank Adams was the first of some forty classmates and eleven widows who sent us holiday greetings. We are grateful to you all. Briefs: Dan Lindsley drove over from Sierra Madre to lunch with Shorty Hitchcock. John Ames and Bill Brett anchored the Washington. D. C., Club luncheon with Bob Blackman. From Jim Coffin: "We will have a grandson at Dartmouth next fall." And Esky, in saying he plans to fly from the Coast for reunion, subtly added: "I'm taking a refresher course in Spanish, just in case." Others mentioning their plan to get to reunion included John Ames, Chet Drury, the Brundages, Fullers, Leavitts, Ralph Parkers, Stackpoles, and the Bumhams (also from the coast).
Paul Goward, in Sarasota in mid- December, called on Guy Keddie. He wanted to be brought up-to-date, may even be in Hanover with us in June. That really would make Balmacaan's 55th official.
