A happy belated New Year's to everyone! Even if your other resolutions have already fallen by the wayside, you can still resolve to e-mail me an update on your life this year. It's amazing to hear about all the different things we're doing.
John V. Campbell writes, "Since graduating I've worked for an online transaction authentication firm, U.S. Encode Corp., in San Diego, California. The operation is headed up by the exCEO of Master Card. In the fall of 20031 spent a little more than three months in Johannesburg, South Africa, selling the company to banks (which was an experience in itself). In the coming months the company will introduce a payment card with a hole in the middle of it and a back that looks like a CD or DVD. This card is the same shape and thickness of a normal card but will eventually be able to transact securely in a grocery store POS device as well as a CD-ROM for online shopping. It should also finally allow online pin-based debit payments to become a working reality." I have to admit I have no idea what he's talking about here, but it sounds very important and practical! John adds, "In my free time, I play basketball in a huff-and-puff league of 40-plus-year-olds on Wednesday nights. I can get to the rim okay but, sadly, my jump shot gets about as hot as Hanover in February." And as if he wasn't busy enough, he has also been moonlighting as a columnist for Page 3 of ESPN.com. "In a nutshell: I come up with leads and my editor gives a green or red light on the idea. It's fun since sports and writing have always been passions of mine." There might be some NBA interviews on the horizon so be looking for those.
Checking in from sunny northern California, Mindy Pereira says she's enjoying her new job at PalmOne and has been hanging out with her roommate Clara Lee, as well as Dave Marmaros '01 and Radha Neelakantan '02. "We found the nicest house in Mountain View and will have more gadgets and gizmos of the electronic and cooking variety than you can shake a stick at!"
Franki Lambert Smith sends this update: "I married Reid Smith '01 on September 18 in Michigan. Julie Wilkens, Greg Lucas, Lauren Welsh, Kristine Lund, Dave Neundorfer, Madhan Iyengar, Tom Schenck, Kat Zaleski, Brian Mason, Catie Ballard, Tom Hackney, Jocelyn Woolworth '05 and a bunch of '01s attended. Hope Dinsmore and Laura Rogers were bridesmaids. Our 'Dartmouth' picture was huge! We live in Lincoln Park in Chicago and I will be starting med school in the fall."
The always exciting Matt Jungers let me know that he has finally left his misery known as Oklahoma and recently moved to Charleston, South Carolina. Patrick Granfield, Greg Brown, Jennifer Nistad, Mike Lovett and Ross Landau were all present for some of his New Year's festivities.
Finally, Mercedes Duff writes: "I just survived (I hope) my first semester in grad school at NYU. I'm looking forward to seeing Kapua Medeiros in Hawaii during winter break."
Many best wishes to each of you for a fantastic 2005.I hope I will catch up with some of you in person at Green Key!
