Dartmouth College had the happiness of beginning the New Year with the knowledge that on the December 31 deadline the Third Century Fund had topped its $51-million goal. The grand total of gifts and pledges at year's end was $51,288 million. By January 11 the inflow of late reports had boosted the figure to $51.54 million and by the time the Trustees and Alumni Council arrived in town for their January 15 joint session the total had grown to $52.1 million.

Since the Third Century Fund stood at $49 million on December 21, only the optimists were betting on reaching the goal. But the final ten days brought several major gifts, and the homestretch efforts of campaign workers did the rest.

Under the handicap of the economic downturn and problems such as campus unrest, the surpassing of the TCF goal was a tremendous achievement. It was hailed by President Kemeny as "a historic milestone for Dartmouth," assuring the College of the resources essential for continued educational leadership.

Alumni accounted for some $36 million of the TCF total, and wives, widows and relatives of alumni contributed another $3.36 million. Foundations gave $8.5 million and corporations $3.4 million.
