A comprehensive microfilm edition of the papers of Daniel Webster, the result of more than five years of work, has been published under the aegis of the Dartmouth College Library and University Microfilms of Ann Arbor, Mich. In a ceremony held in the Treasure Room of Baker Library to mark the event, Francis Brown '25, chairman of the Webster Papers Advisory Board and recently retired editor of The New York Times Book Review, presented the first copy of a printed Guide & Index to the Microfilm to President Kemeny.
The project was organized under the direction of College Librarian Edward Connery Lathem '51 and has been carried to completion under the editorship of Charles M. Wiltse, Professor of History at Dartmouth and author of a highly regarded three-volume biography of John Calhoun.
The first major publication of Webster papers since 1903 and the first truly comprehensive one ever, the microfilm edition brings together invaluable source material of one of the American political giants of the first half of the 19th century. It is the first phase of a two-step scholarly project directed by Professor Wiltse. The second will be a several-volume letterpress edition of selected Webster papers. The overall project has been supported by grants from the National Historical Publications Commission and from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
