The Sarasota Dartmouth Club had a most successful meeting on Wednesday, January 27 at the Holiday Inn Roof Garden. The speaker was Vice president George Colton '35 who brought us up-to-date on doings in Hanover. Our new football coach, Jake Crouthamel '60 is off to a good start. The two most pressing problems are finances and coeducation. Charlotte Ford Morrison and Hugh '26, retired professor of art, were on hand to reminisce about past days at Hanover. About sixty were in attendance. Your scribe was the oldest, 88 years, and Leon Sprague '07 at 86 years was the second oldest.
C.C. Hills went to the alumni luncheon in St. Petersburg on January 27 where George Colton also spoke. Rob Atwood '42, son of our Jake, is the longtime secretary of that club. C.C. joined me at the Sigma Chi monthly meeting in February. We are planning a dinner at the Clearwater Beach Hotel in the near future with Blatner and Falconer in addition to our usual local Dartmouth group.
Robert Falconer has had much more than his share of trouble during the past three months. In November Edna fell in the house and injured her ribs, causing a stay in the hospital. During this time Robert had a hernia operation and on the day he returned from the hospital they received the tragic news of his son Haven's ('39) tragic death in Porto Rico. Details of that tragic event are in the lanuary issue (pages 58 and 84). I received a brave and courageous letter from Bob after he had been in New York for the Memorial Service. "About two hundred attended the service. The people came from Porto Rico, New York State, New York City, and New Jersey. Ort Hicks '21 and two others came from Hanover. Larry Durgin '40 was superb as was the pastor, Dr. George E. McAlpin. I got a real lift out of this."
Bob and Edna are hoping to take a trip in February and we in Florida will make every effort to persuade them to join with us for a get-together. We have a tentative date for dinner with them for February 16.
