The Trustees of the College and the Alumni Council met in Hanover in January and the '25ers involved were Lloyd Brace,Larry Leavitt, Ford Whelden, BobMcKennan and Pete Haffenreffer.

Larry and Dot Leavitt, Bill and BilleeJenkins plan a trip together leaving late this month for Athens, the Greek Islands and Istanbul, then to Vienna and by car to Amsterdam on the way home.

Of the many European trips made by classmates in recent years one of the most extensive was that of Bob and CatherineSimonds which Bob tells about as follows:

"My wife, Catherine, has had four major operations since July 24, the latest of which was performed November 16, her birthday. What a present! Fortunately, the doctors have assured there is no malignancy remaining.

"We knew in February, 1970 that Catherine had to have a serious operation. It was at this time that we decided to take THE TRIP abroad that we had saved for over a long period of years, knowing that there was a chance of cancer.

"We had superb luck all the way. Never a day but that the score was positive when we reviewed it before turning in. The trip was planned about gardens, museums, cities, countryside, etc. We stayed in Mainz, Germany and then had a boat trip down the Rhine to Bonn. We were in Amsterdam and The Hague, Netherlands, and saw the fabulous display of spring flowering bulbs in Keukenhof Gardens on the Queen's birthday. Next to Copenhagen for the opening of Trivoli, to Helsingfors and also celebrated the anniversary of the freedom of Denmark at the close of World War 11. Then to London, Stratford, Kew Gardens, etc. To Newcastle to see the remnants of Hadrian's wall, Hexham Abbey, Blanchtown, Durham Cathedral and College and Washington Old Town, ancestral home of G. Washington. To Edinburgh, a most lovely and historic city. To Dublin, Cork, Limerick and home.

"On return we bought a new home, a split level, with just seven steps up and down from the first floor, a yard practically flat, to which we moved more than four hundred plants from our former home. It has eased our tasks, but not my back."

Dr. George E. Gardner who retires soon as director of the Judge Baker Guidance Center and psychiatrist-in-chief at Children's Hospital was the subject of an interview and feature article in a recent issue of the Boston Globe. Following graduation George earned a master's degree in education followed by a doctorate in psychology, both at Harvard. While working as a psychologist at McLean Hospital he decided to become a physician and entered Harvard Medical School at the age of thirty. He has become recognized as one of the nation's leaders in child psychiatry and is the author of a new book titled "The Emerging Personality." This deals with the worries shared by most families about their children from birth through adolescence and grew out of a seminar for mothers conducted at Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Another newspaper clipping with picture reports that the completion of the first comprehensive edition of the papers of Daniel Webster was signalized by a reception at Baker Library on January 18, Webster's birthdate. The first copy of the guide and index to the microfilm edition was presented to President Kemeny by Francis Brown, chairman of the Webster Papers Advisory Board and recently retired editor of the New York Times Book Review.

Dick Nye, some of whose yachting activities were reported last month, appeared in the New York Times again when he and his son Richard '52 were awarded the 1970 Marine Aluminum Ocean Racing Trophy for the outstanding performance of the "Carina." This included the aluminum sloop's over-all victories in the Bermuda race, the Onion Patch Trophy international team racing series, the Vineyard race and the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy season-long series.

The sad news has just reached us of the death of Don Lyman on January 27 in Excelsior, Minn.
