Herb Lightstone was pictured (in color) and quoted in Fortune magazine (Jan. '71) in an article on the amazing growth of International Chemical & Nuclear Corp. of Pasadena. The company, founded ten years ago by an immigrant Yugoslav bicyclist speaking labored English, acquired Herb from Syntex in 1968. Since then he's been doing the acquiring, as vice president for corporate development, and the company's annual sales have multiplied 30 times in less than three years. Fortune says International Chemical, a drug producer, has hopes of buying a big competitor such as Warner-Lambert or Parke, Davis, and asserts that "Herbert Lightstone, I.C.N.'s vice president for corporate development, is only half joking when he says, "We might have to retrench a year or so in order to get both of them."
Also at the penultimate level: Bill Chapin, named vice president of Wisconsin Malting Corp. in Milwaukee. The company has plants in Milwaukee and Manitowoc. Bob, Carolyn and their five children move from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where he was account manager of private brand sales for Uniroyal Tire Co., a division of Uniroyal, Inc. Bob had been with Uniroyal six years. He was an Air Force fighter pilot and is a major in the reserve.
Joe Pluto reports he's "still railroading for the bankrupt Penn Central. TomSchoonmaker and I got together in Findlay (Ohio) last month. It was nice talking over the 'old days.' "
Dr. John Baldwin is practicing surgery in Monterey, Calif., after returning from a Vietnam tour in late 1969. Air Force MajorJim Waldman writes to clarify that he's still at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. Dr. Joe Hick, who practices in Delta, Colo., notes that in just two years he'll complete 20 years of active military duty and National Guard service. Unfortunately, his next-to-last Guard camp interferes with this year's reunion, so he's "looking forward to the 20th."
Woody and Nancy Goss took their two older children, 10 and 8, on a three-week trip to England last year. Woody is vice president in charge of the loan department of the Mechanics National Bank in Worcester. Nancy, reporting on Goss doings, adds with deep feeling: "I have a new appreciation for plights of class secretary and dearth of news as I just became one!" Nancy went to Sweet Briar.

Mike Fletcher, president of the Mid- Hudson Dartmouth Club, notes with pride that '55 tied for top attendance at the Dartmouth Club Officers Association meeting in Hanover. Classmates attending were Paul Mannes from Washington. KenLundstrom from Wilmington. SwiftyLawrence from Providence, Nels Jones from Springfield. Mass., Bruce Bergquist from Worcester, and Mike. In sharp contrast to widespread '55 leadership in Dartmouth Clubs in recent years. Mike notes that when it comes to the alumni fund, "1955's record is nothing to be proud of. Perhaps in this reunion year we can get '55 on top." An excellent suggestion.
Mike also reports seeing Bill Macurdy.Jud Hale and Red Hennigar in Hanover. Milt Aronowitz at a meeting of the Albany Dartmouth Club, and Prof. DonWoods of the UCLA graduate business school at dinner in Los Angeles.
Dr. Jon Malev completed his Army tour and is now teaching psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. JoeKagrle, the class's leading artist and art instructor, shipped out for the University of Guam. The Air Force promoted Dick Hart from captain to major and transferred him from Nebraska to Louisiana.
