Caroline Luft '89 is the first recipient of the Mark Lebowitz Memorial Prize in the Performing Arts. Active in all aspects of the Hop, and Drama and Music Departments (no overstatement: principal oboeist in DSO, piano accompanist for Glee Club tour, Frost Play winner, Marcus Heiman Achievement Award winner, and lead actress in numerous productions), she joins the Actors Theatre of Louisville (Ky.) this fall as a literary intern. And for the next five years Carrie, as class secretary, will be writing the '89 Class Notes. By her example alone, it appears the arts are alive and well at Dartmouth.

I (Al) submit to you all that the place of Dartmouth, more than any other attribute, distinguishes it from its sister and brother institutions. The granite of New Hampshire has shaped in a special way each visitor to, or resident of, North Country society since long before the arrival of European settlers. This environment has bred instincts in each of us during our passage, just as they were bred in Native Americans before us. It not buildings or faculty or administrators, not mascots or murals is the constant in all our experiences, the reference for what we bring from the place, the stone on which we write while here.

A most unique part of this environment is Mt. Moosilauke; I doubt more than a couple would disagree, and suspect they may no longer read this magazine anyway. Consider, then, the article this August in The Dartmouth: "Mt. Moosilauke may get clearcut." The U.S. Forest Service proposes to log on the west flank of this mountain. Around my amazement, two misconceptions were dispelled: first, that the College owned all of Mt. Moosilauke, and controlled its use; second, that no one would consider logging this icon again the first time it was logged being in the late nineteenth century.

Sad news only will the remainder of this column bear. Lili Kreckovic Dollar died of cancer on July 9, 1989. She is survived by husband John Dollar '74, brother Peter Kreckovic '73, and son Thomas Dollar, age three. A fuller obituary will follow shortly.
