Last month I mentioned that Joel Heathcote's ('61) notes deserved your attention; last month Joel resigned. Now you understand why no engagement notices appear here.
My pleas for correspondence have not gone unanswered, and I think you will agree that these personal notes are what will keep this column interesting long after you tire of a neurotic bachelor's conjugal brickbats. Furthermore it is kind of irritating to see your name pop up in here out of the blue, as though whatever is reported is what you most want people to know about your doings. Case in point: David Morse has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex., and has been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo., for training in the armament systems field. Now I don't know David; David does not know me. Who am I to gloat over his service training just because it was reported in the "Winsted, Conn., Citizen?"
One minor request, however. Last month I peered into my campus mailbox and there, peering back, was one of those smallish bright orange envelopes with the floral lining. Wow! Postmarked Bangor, Me., which just happens to be very near Waterloo. Therein was a charming note from Buzzy McKernan, wife of Jock, announcing the birth of Peter Alexander McKernan Sept. 10, 1970. She added, "If you'd like a nice contrast to that happy news, here's some morbid: Jock left Feb. 3 for four months' active duty—including two months basic training and two months some other stuff—with the Army National Guard (ugh). He's now at Fort Jackson, S. C., and after April 11 will be at Fort Gordon, Ga." (better than the "Citizen" no.)- This was a most welcome note, but just couldn't compete with the Great Expectations its envelope generated. Abn two shades paler will add years to my life and I'll still be able to dangle it out of my pocket to advantage.
A retraction. Dave Young in response to my characterization of U. Va. as all-male; "As a first-year student at the Law School I feel obliged to correct this erronem reference. (What egalatarians these lawyer be!) U. Va. has this year gone coed at the undergraduate level. Furthermore, there a several attractive and lovable women (out of how many?) in the Law School, a fact I can attest to personally!!" (What male- chauvinist pigs these lawyers be!) In defense, I only used the original reference to set up a line about Larry Killgallon Thank goodness Dave didn't write me sooner; I would have had to lie.
Meanwhile, emphatically meanwhile PeterF. Paul would like his "many road trio and drinking partners" to know what's become of him "after leaving Hanover hastily one February morning of 1968 i worked for the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation for a while in London as head of the Draft Dodger's assistance program called STOP. Got engaged to a Danish girl there and brought her back to Miami Finished up my BA at Sun Tan U. and am now off to law school." Strikes me there's something missing there, but believe me I'm not asking for it.
Bud Fricek did marry Holly Wilde a graduate of Ohio University, in Bay Village, Ohio, December 18. Bud works for the Chi Corporation in Cleveland, cha-cha-cha.
Bill Koenig- writes to assure me I do "a nice job of filling the scarcity of details" in these notes. It's a good thing we were both English majors or I might be sensitive. Bill works for an Indiana organization which does I'm not quite sure what. He says, "My job has given me a number of surprises, not the least of which is a rather enlightening view of potential in the world of business . . . Power and resources can be nice assets when you want to accomplish a particular change! Have been spending a great deal of my time working indirectly for Yale. They are considering a new loan plan for financing tuition increases which has some far reaching repercussions.
"With recent events affecting the political atmosphere, I've been very conscious of the luxury we had on campus to fuse our responses and emotions and just stop the programmed walk of routine. Last spring's activities planted seeds of radicalism which are slowly being nurtured by a Midwest climate ... so much for a fraction of my frustrations."
Bill passed along a letter from John McCravey, who has been accepted at med school in Memphis starting September. Much of what John says certainly bears reprinting in the class newsletter, although he had expected to fly to "Europe about the first of February and may not be around to work it up for us. Some observations: "The 'movement' is reaching out into the provinces and even to Knoxville, Tenn.. although I believe it's more cultural (hair, dope, and bellbottoms) than social and political. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to discuss something with some freak whom you assume is intelligent and having him lay some mindless revolutionary bull- shit on you, in an East Tennessee twang no less ... I believe we were spoiled in our setting by people who think. I would give anything for a few people who could conceptualize their thoughts and were not always concerned with pettiness. Makes one want to be an elitist."
Moonbeam's letter is also full of news about wayward classmates, which I'll save for another time.
