Although many of us have already celebrated our 50th birthday, some classmates are still waiting to turn the corner. Happy birthday to you "younger" guys.
Stu Russell lives in Concord, N.H., and keeps in shape by riding his bike to work at the Federal Building and by serving as a den master for the local Cub Scouts. He recently returned from visits to Cameroon and Scotland. Ted Bracken did a great job with the recent Alumni Fund effort, and he also gathers information for me to pass on. He reports that Pete Sapione has moved from Hong Kong to Sydney, still working for Banker's Trust. Pete Frederick has moved back from Paris to Delaware, still doing his best for the U.S. Commerce Department. Hank Amon has been in Prague working for White and Case in efforts to assist with privatization of the formerly socialist system. Bruce Jolly has recently returned from Scandinavia. And just where have you been? Drop us a line by using my address below.
Father George Rutler is a best-selling author and a popular retreat master who has been praised for his clear, unapologetic, literary, and precise preaching. Thousands have flocked to the seminars given by George, a Roman Catholic Priest. He has studied at Oxford University, the pontifical Angelicum and Gregorian Universities, Johns Hopkins, and Dartmouth. He has been a frequent guest on Mother Angelica's Eternal Word Television Network.
During the past year, two of our classmates have passed away. Alvin R. Martin III died in March, and Stephen W. Smith III died last December. I recently received a note from Ellen Smith, who writes, "Steve's sudden death by heart attack was a tremendous shock to us all, but life does go on, and we are comforted by many wonderful memories. Betsey and I recently showed our mare at the Morgan Horse Show at the Big E. That was always one of Steve's favorite summer trips, and he would have been very pleased and proud of his girls this year. They pinned in every class they entered and brought home five blue ribbons. On Friday evening, Betsey was asked to help present a trophy to the winner of the Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure Championship class in honor of Steve and his dedication to the Morgan breed and the young people who work with them." Ellen is very grateful to Budge Gere '66, who was Steve's longtime friend and who performed a very special and meaningful memorial service.
A slow economy has not stopped Carlisle Retailers from expanding. Lorenzo T. "Ren"Carlisle opened his sixth new store during the summer. "When you have 13 stores, you had better open a 14th one fast," Ren says with a smile about lucky numbers. The economy and changes in the retail industry pushed Carlisle's toward clothing sales and away from full-line department stores. "We're dictated by what we think we can do best. It seems to be working," say Ren, the chairman and CEO of Carlisle Retailers.
Rumors are interesting. Is it true that BillDuschatko is a stunt flier in local air shows? Is it true that Jerry Armstrong is quitting his job at Merrill Lynch in order to become a rodeo clown? Did Ray Clinton change his name to Rodham? Will the 30th Reunion include the likes of Roger Meade, JimWestfall, Peyton Storli, Roddy Powers,Chuck Lobitz, and Carl Boe? If you know any of the answers, write to us today. In the meantime, eat carefully and keep your eye on the ball.
