Probably very few Tenners know the story of Bucky Allen and his Camp Chewonki. It has been told recently in the "Maine Sunday Telegram." The writer, Bill Caldwell, tells of having passed the camp sign daily over a long period of years without knowing that this story was waiting to be told. He received his tip in Bangkok, Thailand, when a Thai prince and Thai ambassador approached him saying "We hear you are from Damariscotta, Me. We went to Gamp Chewonki, Wiscasset. So when you get back to Maine, please go and see our old camp director. Clarence Allen!" As a result of fas interview with Bucky the writer states 'If I'd been in Venezuela instead of Thailand, or in Antartica or in Turkey or Kuwaitsome other famous 'old Chewonki boy' might have come striding across some other room and said the very same sentence. For the Chewonki network reaches to even continent and all 50 states."
Bucky purchased a sheep ranch in Maine in 1915 and started the camp with 15 boys in 1915. The annual growth of the camp population was remarkable and in Bucky's time reached a total of close to 3000 boys. These included boys who in later years have reflected glory upon the camp and its founder by their widespread activities in worldwide reach. Today sons and grand- sons of Chewonki boys are showing up to spend their summers learning ecology, Conservation, birdwatching.
Today through this tine tribute to Bucky Allen the tables are turned on the quotation from the scriptures: "Prophet is not without honor save in his own country," and Bucky deserves a loud Wah Hoo Wah from his classmates. ,
The sad news continues to reach us. we have lost John VanderPyl and Lennie McClintock, two of the stalwarts of our class. Both have been in poor health for quite a period of time.
It won't be long before a number of us will be packing up for the trip back to Hanover. If you can navigate the distance from wherever you are we urge you to join the group which will celebrate the 61st anniversary of our last days in Hanover back in 1910.
In the meantime bear in mind—ana checkbook—Andy Scarlett's annual chore for the Alumni fund.
