Sixty years ago this month South Fayerweather Hall was destroyed by fire. PercyNourse, Louis Belcher, and Bert Kent, all of 1910, and Sam Pickering 'll lived in Center Fayerweather at the time. They were all awakened by the glare and the noise and were among the first on the scene to assist as best they could. Fortunately there had been heavy falls of snow that winter - four or five feet of it. No doubt this saved many lives, for in a matter of minutes the only way to escape was to jump from a window. There was a breathless hush on the campus the next day, for we did not know until late in the afternoon whether or not everyone got out safely, which by the Grace of God they did. Several were hurt but no lives were lost.
