Sun City, Ariz., is a fantastic development with its six complete recreation centers, each containing every conceivable facility for enabling the retired person to keep occupied with both sports and creative possibilities. Lillian and StanWeld enjoyed a week there in March in one of Del Webb's furnished apartments. Nearby were Edith and Dutch Waterbury in their lovely home facing one of the golf fairways. The Waterburys did much to add to their visitors' pleasures, driving the Welds over the Apache Trail with luncheon in the copper mining town of Miami (guess where), taking them to the beautiful Japanese flower gardens, furnishing a delightful steak cookout, and including a lecture in and tour of the modern Sun City hospital. Altogether it was a most exciting week for your Secretary with the tempera- ture hovering around the mid 90's. Inciden- tally. Dutch is the new recording secretary of the Phoenix Dartmouth Club of which Bill Terry '13 is the corresponding secre- tary. Dutch reports recent visits from MarkAllen and Jim Steen.
Two more of the faithful left us in March, Chet Haycock on the 30th and Hal Belcher on the 31st. Both served their fellowmen, each in a different way. Chet for many years was a U. S. Army officer, retiring in 1946 as a colonel. Hal distinguished himself as treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for 38 years, followed by 12 years as trustee of many institutions in Europe-Asia, and the United States. To Alberta and Marian goes the sympathy of all the Class.
Harold and Marian celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1954 with a reception attended by 70 relatives and friends. On his retirement in 1959 Hal was the guest of honor at a dinner in the Old South Church, Boston, attended by 250 guests. Two years prior to his retirement he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Olivet College in Michigan. Throughout his life he had a constant, dedicated interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A. in Maiden and Boston. This devotion culminated in 1964 with a Special Award given him by the Boston Y.M.C.A.
The memorial service on April 17, 1971 held in the First Congregational in Maiden was unique in that among the five clergymen participating were one of his grandsons and his son-in-law. The Class secretary represented 1912 at this service.
We also sadly record the recent deaths of two of our widows, Mary, wife of Harold Church, and Marion, wife of Warren Wheeler.
As we write this, we look forward to the Class Officers' meeting, April 30-May 1, and our 59th reunion in June.
