The winners of Dartmouth's three major awards for achievement in athletics this year include: Jim Chasey from Los Gatos, Calif., the All-East and All-Ivy quarterback, who was presented the Kenneth Archibald Athletic Prize as Dartmouth's outstanding all-round senior athlete; All-America rover back Murry Bowden from Snyder, Texas, who won the Alfred Watson Trophy as the outstanding athlete of the 1970-71 year; and Willie Bogan, the All-East defensive safety and Rhodes Scholar from Albion, Mich., who won The Dartmouth Cup for athletic achievement and contribution to Dartmouth.
Rusty Martin '68, a center and defenseman on Dartmouth hockey teams from 1965 to 1968 and recently discharged from duty with the U. S. Navy, has been named assistant director of sports information at Dartmouth. ... The first annual Tom Dent Memorial Alumni-Varsity soccer game will be played on September 11.
Karl Michael '29, who retired in 1970 after coaching swimming at Dartmouth since 1939, is the second recipient of the Robert A. (Red) Rolfe Award for contribution to athletics and particularly Dartmouth athletics.
Gary Dicovitsky, a guard from Elizabeth, N. J., has been elected captain of the 1971-72 Dartmouth basketball team.' Paul Erland, the Ivy League scoring champion and All-Ivy forward, is the first recipient of the A.D. (Dolly) Stark Award as the most valuable player on Dartmouth's basketball team.
Recipients of top swimming awards this year at Dartmouth are Captain Al Rheem from Denver, Colo., who won the John Glover Award; Jim Gotts-chalk from Bedford, Ohio, who won the Karl Michael Award; and Bill Thorwarth from Fort Washington, Pa., the outstanding diver award. The top freshman award was presented to Brad Gilman, the distance freestyle standout from Los Angeles.
