The Dartmouth Trustees at their January meeting voted to raise tuition by $80 per term, effective next fall. The cost of board and room will also go up, although the exact amount of these increases has not been announced. It is expected that board will be about $70 higher for a three-term year and room rent will be about $40 higher.
The new tuition figure will be $1020 per term, compared with the present $940. On a three-term basis, the current annual cost of $2820 will go up to $3060; but since The Dartmouth Plan calls for a total of 11 terms for the degree, instead of the current 12-term requirement, four years of tuition at Dartmouth will come to $11,220 rather than $11,280 at the current rate. However, the College's budget projections for the next few years call for additional tuition increases.
The steady increase in tuition, match- ing rising College costs in general, has led President Kemeny to initiate a study here of the ways in which a deferred tuition plan and expanded loan funds can help students to meet the heavy financial burden of a college education. President Kemeny also has had a leading role in initiating a joint study by nine New England colleges, with Sloan Foundation support, to devise a tuitionhelp plan that will combine deferred tuition with increased availability of student loan funds.
As a first step toward a deferredtuition plan at Dartmouth, the Trustees last month approved such a plan for Tuck School. It was decided to begin with the graduate business school rather than the undergraduate College, because Tuck graduates at the present time are more likely to obtain jobs with good salaries and thus be able to pay off tuition debts more rapidly.
