Spring must still stir the spirits of the members of the Class of '48. I received four letters last month. If only they had been unsolicited—
Bill Malone is practicing law in Englewood, Colo. The firm of Simon, Eason, Hoyt and Malone is a professional corporation and Bill finds life in Ski Country, U. S. A., just fabulous. He reminded me of the poker obligation still outstanding in my favor—he said the fact that he still owed me a hundred dollars was a "barb in his heart." He would be more than willing to pay but the statute of limitations had run! His activities include board membership in the United Fund, Big Brothers, and Sertoma Glub. He and Nancy have four children, two boys and two girls. Nancy is a Wyoming girl, and they first met at a ski "Mud Race" in Saratoga, Wyo, She was perched on a beer keg—apparently in control of the supply—and Bill developed an immediate interest. Brad Richardson, a '49er is their next door neighbor.
Dick Ruggles writes that all goes well in Norfolk, Va. Dick is the minister of the Second Presbyteran Church there, and he and Martha have two children, Fran and Martha, fifteen and twelve. Kiwanis, acting as Chaplain for the Navy League, and working with drug programs—United Drug Alert Commission—keep Dick busy. He finds his work with the drug problem not only most important, but also very rewarding. Dick says that the "new plan" will mean that he will have two candidates for the classes of '7B and '82. I mention this as it indicates a strong positive attitude which is important at this point.
Norm Laird is the new national field sales manager for Becton-Dickinson Division of Becton, Dickinson and Company. Norm joined B-D in 1950. Most recently he has been regional sales manager, hospital-surgical products, for the Middle Atlantic area; before that, he was field coordinator for government sales. He and wife Bonnie are the parents of three: Norman, and Nancy, 12.
Tom Huffman has been reading the brochures from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce (Bill Malone should note). Tom is leaving Cleveland, Ohio and St. Luke's Hospital, where he is head of the Department of Cardiology, to join a specialty group in Longmont (near Boulder), Colo. He is looking forward to a change from big city "indoor" life to small town "outdoor" living. Skiing, of course, is incidental!
Bill Maloney is among those who are feeling the educational pinch. Son John is a senior at the University of Massachusetts and son David at Babson Institute. He and Dot find things a bit quiet at home now, although his activities as a Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve take a good bit of time. Bill is New England Group Insurance manager for Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. They live in Westwood and Bill works in Boston.
The 50th State is represented by HughShearer who lives in Honolulu. Hugh started practising law in Hawaii after graduating from Stanford Law School in 1951 and is a partner in the office of Anderson, Wrenn & Jenks. For many years, Hugh served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii but had to give it up because of lack of time. However, he still serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Andrews Priory which is an Episcopal School for girls in Honolulu founded over a century ago under the patronage of King Kamehameha and Queen Emma.
