This is being written the first week of April and history seems very much with us and moving at an unusually fast pace. It will be interesting to see by the time this goes to print how many of today's events are still important, and why. The importance of some events, the lack of importance of others will probably seem self-evident and, in retrospect, it will be difficult to understand why this was not clear at the time they happened.
I had a note from Phil Viercck. Phil is principal of three elementary schools in the Bennington, Vt., area. He has published several books and is currently working on a new one. Phil and Ellen have three daughters and one son. He reports that the Vermont hills are a wonderful place to live but in the summertime it is nice occasionally to visit his parents in South Dartmouth, Mass., where he can do a little salt water fishing.
Phil and Ellen were host to other Dartmouth families in late February for a ski weekend. Burt Hicock '45, Dave Kendall '45, Bob Kendall '49, and Jim Schwedland. I was in Hanover recently and dropped by to see Jim at the D.O.C. He reported that there were 22 people at the Vierecks' for the ski weekend which is a real houseful. Jim and Jane have a daughter just four years old who is enthusiastic about skiing. The troops skied at Timber Ridge Mountain which is owned and operated by Jeff Pitchford '64. This area is located at the north side of Magic Mountain in southern Vermont and they report that the area is most interesting. This was the third annual ski reunion for the crew.
Jim is Educational Officer at the Outing Club and the list of activities which they sponsor and which he is involved in show a healthy well-rounded outdoor program. In essence, they are trying to use recreation as an educational springboard, and he teaches as well as instructing in everything from the art of snowshoe making to trap shooting.
Carl Ward is with New England Telephone Co. and is accounting manager in the western accounting office in Springfield, Mass. Carl and Ruth have three children, Jon, a freshman at Ohio State University; Dale, a junior in high school and a major in the Air Force Junior R.O.T.C.; and Martha, a high school freshman. Ruth is financial secretary of their church and Carl is vice chairman of the executive budget committee of the Pioneer Valley United Fund with an annual fund drive of one and three quarter million dollars. Carl's letter included a remark about . . being content to grow old gracefully ..." and it would seem that he should have included ... but actively.
Paul Twomey is switching from Boston to New York where he will become assistant comptroller and corporate control officer for the Continental Can Company. After College and Tuck and Navy duty during World War II and the Korean conflict, Paul has been associated with Raytheon Company in their missile systems division and their distributor products division. He and Margaret have four children: Paul, Nancy, Patricia, and Mark.
Russ and Elsie Palmer live in West Hartford, Conn., and Russ is assistant secretary of the group division of Aetna Life Insurance Co. He also teaches future group representatives, group insurance at the University of Connecticut and lectures with I.B.M. on the same subject. They have five children and Russ is hopeful his oldest son will go to Dartmouth. Russ is an enthusiastic golfer and goes to the Masters Tournament every year. His family also enjoys hockey and an occasional football game in Hanover.
Dick Sassenberg is the president and founder of Piclear Inc. His company makes a device which is used in every country that has T.V. In 1967 Dick took a trip around the world to show his company's product. This device is used in conjunction with motion picture film and makes its reproduction on T.V. much clearer. Dick and Margaret live in Larchmont, N. Y. Their youngest child, Curt, was born in 1967 and Dick finds time in between work to water ski, fish, and spend time on his power boat in Tong Island Sound.
Dartmouth in Ghana: Two Dartmouth alumni recently got together in an archeological excavation pit near Salaga in the northern region of Ghana. They are GordonWinkler '48 (l) and Duncan Mathewson '60.
