Your secretary went on a letter-writing spree during July and received such a heart-warming and voluminous response they overflowed our allotted space in the Alumni Magazine for some months to come. Accordingly, it has to be spread over October and November and possibly December but will be supplemented by a special issue of 'LEVEN UP the latter part of October in which some of your responses will be presented to our Class in full detail.
Don and Fanny Cheney attended the annual meeting of the Florida Historical Society at Port Lucie during May and followed up with the Sons of the American Revolution in June at Palm Beach. He is historical consultant for the Orange County Bi-Centennial Committee and president of the Orange County Historical Society, with plenty to do on plans for funding a permanent home' and museum.
John Pearson phoned and said "True" Dudley,Dutch Waterbury, and Ken Clark were 1911's representatives at Commencement. We envy their ability to get around.
Ruth Backus continues to write to our class widows on behalf of your secretary. She chaired her 60th Reunion which went off beautifully with 51 ladies back and no complaints about dormitory life and the half mile walk down the hall to the john. She added "Priscilla and I had lunch at the Hanover Inn in May or early June - it was fine to see girls around. They were not glamorous looking."
Harold and Ruth Burtt as noted earlier are living at a facility for octogenarians, etc. "Mosses" are one of his hobbies (Hopper Allison goes for ferns). Recently he fed the grapevine the rumor that he is studying the "Bryophytes of First Community Village." Some of the residents were quite worried. Knowing Harold's background in psychology they wonder if "bryophytes" are some kind of queer people. At the First Community Village he recently won first prize in a songguessing contest - Men's Division - in which they had to guess the titles of old songs from our hey-day. He got nine right out of 25. In the Women's Division the winner got 18 out of 25.
John Coggins made the trip to Nashua-Hudson in June with ease. Seth Emerson's widow Grace met him. John started his 62nd year at the Chase-Manhattan Building. Cathy Coggins was graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara, and now writes for a West Coast paper. Doug and Carolyn are still at Berkeley.
Chick Jordan sounded happy and content over the phone in late July. His housekeeper is a jewel without her the alternative is a nursing home which we all prefer not to use if it can be avoided. He misses his many past summers on Bailey's Island off the Maine coast and the southwest breeze that blows on shore every afternoon off the Atlantic and makes sweaters a must.
John Learoyd and Sam Aronowitz represented 1911 at the class officers annual meeting in Hanover May 4-5. 1911 received honorable mention among the outstanding classes the past year for Ken Clark's outstanding feat of establishing the Samson Occom scholarship fund known as the Class of 1911 Permanent Fund on which Wee Kimball elaborated in the Spring special edition of LEVEN UP. Bill Shapleigh '12 told your secretary that Sam and his brother Milt '13 looked just the same as they did in College. Sam writes he is at his office every day and thankful to be included among the 55 classmates still living. He plans to take in one of the football games in Hanover.
Lin-Yi Ho reported in late summer that he had visits from friends and relatives from New York and Northern California. He manages getting along from day to day but, a lot like many of us, admits he can no longer do all the things he would like to do.
Our executive committee voted to contribute 5250 from the Class Treasury for transcription of the almost illegible holographic diary of Samson Occom who did so much for Dr. Wheelock and Dartmouth College. Ken Clark was in Hanover in early August and on August 6 handed the $250 check personally to Librarian Lathem. Mr. Lathem said the undertaking would start at once and asked that the Class be told that all in the Library were delighted with 1911 's generosity and of their indebtedness and appreciation. Full report to the Class will be made in a special issue of 'LEVEN UP scheduled for the latter part of October.
