Time has me captive: I'm writing in a cottage looking out over the beautiful and busy harbor of Stonington, Me.: the Reunion Committee will not meet until early September at the lovely hideaway of Don and Virginia Wilbur down country; and copy for the Penn game reunion is now too late.

In any event, all notes here must defer to the very sad news of the untimely passing of four stalwarts: Charlie French, Bud Seavey, Dick Teel, and Al Arsenault. Obituaries will be found elsewhere in this issue; I am pleased that the appreciation for Bub Seavey was written, by Ted's request, by Ted Learnard (with assists from BevBeers, and others). I wish this might always be for others; close friends can always speak for themselves and the Class better than any single officer, or department of the College. Copydeadlines will not prevent any future personal farewells - sent to me.

Dave Dyche has been appointed Co-Bequest Chairman to fill the unexpired term of Charlie French whose death occurred June 29.

With space at a premium, the following notes are abbreviated more than I might wish. BillMcNiff who was a professor of History at Miami University (Ohio) for 40 years before retiring; was inducted as a special member of Phi Beta Kappa during the Miami University's Sesquicentennial. He continues to teach at Hanover College and the Western College, and currently is a part-time archivist; past president of the Ohio Academy of History.

Si Simonds has earned the highest award given by the Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver medal for 60 years of service; on June 8 in Reading, Pa. (I share a son's pride with Si's son Don who reported this honor; my father also was similarly honored for his volunteer service.)

Bill Buchanan follows our only other Trustee, Frank Harrington, in stepping down from this important office. Bill was a trustee since 1961; he spent his entire business career with the Appleton Wire Works (Wise.), becoming president and general manager in 1938, and chairman of the board in 1969 (and with the parent company, Albany International Corp. We all recall his serving as chairman of the 3d Century Fund (1970-1).

Fred Maguire retired in June after 24 years on the faculty of the Ohio State School of Journalism; his honors for his newspaper work of 25 years included Harvard's Niemen Fellowship, annually awarded to 10 U.S. newsmen, and membership in Sigma Delta Chi - both were for work as editor of the Lowell (Mass.) Telegram in exposing political corruption that put the mayor in jail and led to changes in the city's charter.

Joe Butler was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in June by the Youngstown State University; he is known as Director of the Butler Institute of American Art, founded by his grandfather; he was honored two years ago by the State of Ohio with the first Ohio Arts Council Award for his "superior service to Ohio's Arts." We hope to see some of his art next June at Reunion, together with art of other distinguished classmates.

Jimmie and Emmy Reid were at the Alumni College; also Pete and Alma Wheatley (sorry not to have been home to greet you). Busy times for the Reids: daughter Annie was married; son Mack graduated from Boston University.

Alex and May Bess Gibson, living in the ancestral home-town (Mclndoe Falls, Vt.) are also very active: a March cruise to Bermuda (and surprised not to find the Larry Fishbeins there ... several years gone, to Coral Gables, Fla.) Alex keeps very active in his profession as a scholar of the French language: a column for the FrenchReview, also one for the Andover Bulletin, and keeping in touch with former PA students.

Locally, we were very sorry not to have attended Stu Eldredge's "Retrospective Exhibition" at the Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester, Vt. with 61 paintings selected from his work from the 1930s through '70s.

The Pete Haffenreffers' Mount Hope (R.I.) Farm was the June site of informal reuning for 103 members of the Class of 1925.
