For some reason summer seems to be shorter than ever each year and suddenly Labor Day is here with school and college departures, back to the old grind for the parents, and a deadline for your secretary for the first column of the new year, and, of course, with less news than I would like to have as the year starts. I will echo the plea of our Tithe editors that we would all welcome any news of yourselves or classmates you see.

The revised class directory was mailed out in July and in the event you did not receive your copy please let me know. I have some extras and can send you another if needed. As might be expected I have already received notices of address changes for perhaps 20 classmates so we will try to find a way to bring you up to date periodically, perhaps with a supplement to Tithe.

The May meeting of the class executive committee was attended by 16 classmates. Among the items discussed was the balance in our treasury, amounting to $8,800. The special fund has not been used due to a lack of a proper project in Hanover, so it is invested in a long term account until an ultimate use is determined. There was also discussion of the Alumni Fund, the various informal reunions, a proposed trip to Greece, and the Bequest program.

The Maine lobster picnic at Tommy and LauraThomas' near Bath was the usual resounding success. Present were Brad and Kay Chase, Harry and Rose Coronis, Frank and Marge Curtis, Pete and Barbara Fitzherbert, Ross and Bounce Woodbridge, Ed and Helen Higbee, Cliff and Phyllis England, Milt and Marge Johnston, Paul and Lea Cleaveland, Ray and Jerri Builter, Dick and Ruth Stowell, Tom and Jean Parker, Jim and Kay Stephens, Tommy and Ruth Thompson, Tony and Esther Muello, Karl and Dottie Wolff, Clay and Ellen Mellor, Bill and Abby Niss, Bob and Dottie Keller, Brint Schorer, Paul Guibord, Phil Mclnnis, and Phil's daughter and son-in-law, John and Nancy Barto '52. If you like lobster and are in the neighborhood next August you shouldn't miss it. The October gathering at Stone End Lodge on Sunapee on the weekend of the Dart-Penn game will be over when you read this and will be reported later, however the list of reservations has a number of new classmates participating. A final word on this subject involves a possible Florida Golf Safari in February. More on this later.

The April 11 Tithe included a picture of Dan Doan and a report from him of a hike up Moosilauke. Dan and Ernestine live in Laconia, N.H., where he is writing along with hiking and catching up on his reading. Tithe also mentioned his daughter, Ruth Doan MacDougall, who is also a writer. I recently received a copy of Book-of-the-Month-Club News for July in which her book is offered as an alternate for the July selection. The cover of the News is a painting "Rainbow over Jenny Lake" by Albert Bierstadt courtesy of Morton D. May.

Dick Stowell, who lives with wife Ruth in Vestal, N.Y., has been named chairman of the department of Administrative Management at Broome Community College in Binghamton, N.Y. where he teaches. Dick graduated from Tuck and managed a bakery plant in Vestal before he joined the Broome faculty in 1963.

Belated congratulations to Paul Cleaveland and Dr. Bill Curtis on their election to the Dartmouth Alumni Council. Paul was reelected to a two-year term from Region I, the New England states. Bill was elected to a two-year term representing Region VI, the southwestern states. Paul received his law degree from Yale after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth. He is now a partner in the firm of Devine, Millimet, McDonough, Stahl, Branch, and Paul S. Cleaveland in Nashua, N.H. Bill received his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, and now is a radiologist and partner in the Boulder Colorado Medical Center.

For those interested in sailing, perhaps you noticed the cover of the July issue of Yachting which has a fine picture of Kendrick Wilson's Whitby-45 "Troon." The caption doesn't mention whether Dick was aboard or not, or if he was busy taking care of his duties as chairman of the Board of the Avco Corporation. The June 17 edition of The New York Times also carried an article about the marriage of Dick's daughter, Holland, in Darien, Conn. Another news clipping sent to me in July concerned the marriage of Robert Whipkey to Miss Lynn Hathaway of Stamford, Conn. He is the son of Jim and Dorothy Whipkey of Pittsburgh, Pa. John Sawyer wants to know if it is our Arthur Appleton who owns "My Gallant" who was running at Belmont racetrack in June?

In the past few months I've managed to see a few other classmates, Dune Newell in Phoenix, Brew Towne in Tucson, Blair Rainey in Houston, and Jack Greenwood in Connecticut. Hope to see more of you at the various informal reunions and football games.
