With the trouble spots of the world on the increase, those in South America included, mention of Scotty Palmer seems an appropriate start of this column. The Boston papers recently carried an article and several pictures concerning Scotty's doings with the Peace Corps. Apparently he was introducing so many recreational and educational programs on his own and winning the friendship of so many Peruvians, that Communists in the area felt it necessary to brand him a spy and have his activities curtailed. Scott anticipated this in the section of his letter printed in the last "Fifty-nine Line."

A letter from his father announced that Earl Glazier and wife Kathy are proud parents of a son, Earl 3rd, born January 4 in Bombay, India. Earl is working for the First National City Bank of New York in Bombay. Charlie Decker added a message to his Christmas card which may brighten the scene for you New Yorkers. He described an "outstanding new pad. Highest spot in the city with fantastic view, swimming pool, etc." Sounds like bachelor haven. Maybe he's in the phone book. It wouldn't be fair to him if I gave you his address.

The military services are slowly releasing our men. Unfortunately some of our doetors still have visits to Uncle Sam ahead of them. Just discharged from the Army in early January Sig Ginsburg writes about his duties as information officer at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. He received the Army commendation medal upon his release and is now assistant to the president of Hudson Institute, a non-profit research organization studying problems of national security and international order. Whit Gooch, also just out of the service, spent some time in Germany along with Bob Sands before returning to continue studying architecture at Yale. As far as I know, Tiger Sands is with King Arthur Flour in Boston.

One of the doctors who still has a tour of duty to serve, Bill Boyle, is presently here in Hanover interning at Hitchcock along with Jim Penze and Bill Gentry. They must keep the internes going round the clock. I haven't seen any of them so far. Maybe this column will bring them out in the open; probably, I'll pile up on the slopes and see them on the job.

In case you're wondering why super sleuth Dave Gavitt hasn't been mentioned in any of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI reports, I should mention that "Red Dog" Dick Hoehn outfoxed him. It seems that Hoehn, creative young Harvard Law School student, filled out his questionnaire as if it were Gavitt's and invented all kinds of facts including that about Dave's joining the FBI and his wife being a champion equestrian. Your move, Gavitt! Dave is currently coaching freshman basketball at Providence College.

Congratulations are in order for DickTaylor who made the U.S. Olympic Cross Country team and competed at Innsbruck. As the papers listed it he finished in the middle of the pack in all his races which when you consider the contestants, is an admirable showing. Most of us should admire him just for the training he put in and the physical condition he has maintained.

Winter winds have put a deep freeze on any further '59 news, even from Alumni News Service, so I'll wind up with the doings of the class in Canaan. We entertained Daveand Cynthia Marshall for dinner a few weeks ago. Dave is finishing up at Tuck. Cynthia teaches first grade in Hanover. Class Agent Jim Wooster, Betsy and son Jimmy were our guests for the weekend during which Jim attended class agent meetings. Strange events highlighted a very enjoyable time: While ski patrolling I had to attend a victim injured in the parking lot. While playing bridge, we were asked for help by a teenager whose girl had run his car off the road. We complied and having freed him, we ran out of gas. Returning from the Skiway on Sunday Jim and Betsy happened upon the scene of an accident in which one of our natives, "attempting to gain momentum," had come up out of his driveway without looking and ran broadside into another car. After a wait, Jim got by, and soon the Woosters headed back to Boston. Jim is putting in much time preparing for the Alumni Fund drive. Let's make his efforts worthwhile.

Thaw out and do something newsworthy so either the News Service or I can hear about it.
