Your class officers have just enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Hanover. Those present were Sid and Miriam Stoneman, Wes and Jan Beattie, Jud Pierson, Bob and Babe Fox, George and Polly Farrand, and Bea and I. "Doc" Dey brought us the message of today's undergraduate who wants to feel needed so he serves as a teacher in a high school or ghetto or the ABC program. Eddie Chamberlain '36 discussed admissions problems. Professor Frank Smallwood '51 outlined the new courses on Environmental Studies and presented as a student speaker William Schlesinger '72, son of Bill Schlesinger of Cleveland. William has been instrumental in establishing a new Environ- mental Division in the Outing Club. There was a panel discussion on the dilemma of the College on G.F.P. (Greater Feminine Presence), reports on the Third Century Fund and Alumni Fund - workshops for the class officers. President Kemeny spoke of the problems facing the students, the uniqueness of Dartmouth, his faith in peaceful change, and his promise to lead.

A card mailed in March from Switzerland by Al and Betty Speare reads: "We're just winding up three weeks of skiing. Have taken in Davos, St. Moritz, and Grindelwald. I'm afraid this has spoiled me for the ice and cold winds of New England."

John Shafer of Logansport, Ind., writes: "My life since graduation has been uneventful. I am married and have one daughter, now a college freshman. We have traveled rather often, for family and business reasons, in the states east of the Mississippi, but have only been in Hanover twice since '33. Last June I enjoyed good visits there with Dr. Carl Wilson and Dr. Charles Lyon. Both are in Botany (emeriti) and both were influential in giving me a good start toward a Ph.D. in Botany. Hanover has changed! But an old grad can still navigate by taking bearings from the known buildings of 35 years ago."

This news was sent by Mannie Miller of New York City. "I am still working and living in New York, but plans are in the works now for retirement in the not too distant future. I am a grandfather (via stepson Paul) and my other son (Barry) is at Vanderbilt University waiting anxiously for acceptance to medical school. My activities of late (other than business) have been traveling and golf. Yes, I'm a hacker but I enjoy it. Haven't seen too many of our classmates recently other than Sam Gass, but, hopefully, that will be corrected soon. I extend an invitation to any of our 'hacking' classmates who are in New York to an afternoon of golf."

Roger Kafka of New York City is senior vice president of Farley Manning Associates, a public relations agency, which he helped found in 1954. "On the personal side, daughter Lenore took her A.B. at Middlebury and went on to a master's at Columbia. She was married last summer to Charles Hardy, Haverford '67. Daughter Judy is still in high school, not retarded - just 16. I had a coronary in August '67 that laid me up for seven months and slowed me down for some time after, but am now back full-time, full steam. Recently had lunch with Heagen Bayles, see Gobin Stair every once in a while and Robert Colborn, ditto. Communicate with John Merrill at long intervals."

In the news: Congratulations are in order for Harry Osborne, Crawford, N. J., who was recently confirmed as a Superior Court judge and will be assigned to the Superior Court in Elizabeth.

Sam Black has been named executive director of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries Inc. with headquarters in New York City. He will continue to live in New Britain, Conn., where he is secretary and director of the Stanley Works.

The Class is continuing the Memorial Book Program at Baker Library. During the current college year we have presented five books.

Many thanks to all you people who have kept your secretary supplied with news this year. The next issue is October. Mark your calendars for the Fall Reunion in Hanover on October 10. And a final reminder, if you have not contributed to the Alumni Fund, please do.
