With falling leaves and lowering temperatures the little 3 X 5 cards from the Alumni Office will soon be floating through the mails as increasing numbers of our classmates change their addresses and head Florida-ward for the winter. For the grapefruit leaguers, there will be a '31 Florida reunion this year - plans have already begun. Jim Swift sent the fact sheet and I am happy to help with the promotion. It seems that Jim and Annette, Bill and Lee Schuldenfrei,Tom and Connie Williams, and Gray and BettyMagee have all joined forces for this get-together. The date is Tuesday, January 7, 1975; the place is Patricia Murphy's, 429 North Federal Highway, Daytona Beach; the time 5:30 p.m.; the deal, $10 per person for the complete dinner, served at 7 p.m., and preceded by a cash bar. Send your reservations to Tom Williams, Apt. 406, 5700 Northwest 2nd Avenue, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, and the sooner the better. If you pay now and can't make it later, Tom will refund your money 10 days prior to January 7.
Big news from Haverhill, Mass., is that Governor Sargent nominated W. Clifford McDonald as Justice of Central District Court of North Essex County. I believe this nomination was approved by the Executive Council. I'm sure the Class joins me in sincere congratulations, Cliff.
Ed Hutchinson writes from Machias, Maine: "We've been here a year and a half and only wish we had come sooner. Enjoy every minute of it - in the garden — on the beach - and just sitting watching the ever-changing ocean. We wish we were that close, Ed, but we have to wait until the leaves fall from the trees before we can see the water here.
A most interesting communication from BobFrederick could well result in a constructive project for our class. Bob writes: 'I am interested in the average temperature and humidity for the June 1 st-September 30th period in various parts of the U.S., and even abroad. Do you think you could possibly ask the members of the Class to send me these figures for where they live?" Let's all check our local weather services and write to Bob at 289 Grace Church Street, Rye, New York 10580. This could be interesting and fruitful.
How practical is the "Golden Rule" in every day experience? William Henry Alton, C.S.B. discusses this question in lectures at various parts of the country, under the auspices of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Our information has it that he spoke in the Pittsburgh area in June, but I am sure he is speaking elsewhere as well. It would be interesting if Bill could send us a schedule of dates. Perhaps some of the Class would be interested.
Additional retirements and semi-retirements continue to take place. Bob Oelman has retired as chairman of National Cash Register, but he will continue as director of the maker of cash registers, computer equipment, and other products. Dr. Maury Whittinghill retired in June from the University of North Carolina Department of Zoology, after 32 years of service. Your secretary does not yet know what his future plans are, but hopes that he will advise.
Finally, Trudy and I are settled on Chebeague Island, where I presently am sitting in the library in front of a cozy fire, typing these notes. Our house is 75 per cent completed, with the music room interior yet to be finished and the piano yet to arrive. We expect to stay here until December, than probably go to the Coast for a few weeks to pick up some class news.
Don't forget to write now that you have more time.
