The Alumni Fund Drive is well underway now. Here in Philadelphia, we received a visit from President Dickey and Fund Drive Chairman Rupert Thompson '28, both of whom spoke at our kick-off meeting and Club dinner meeting which followed that session. Once again, I must say that I wish every '63 had an opportunity to visit with President Dickey as an alumnus. He was as vigorous, dedicated, interested, and sincere as ever and did another outstanding job of getting the alumni "up" for the campaign. We've been receiving weekly bulletins about our class progress from Hanover and BillRussell; our class goal is about $2000 more than we collected last year - so please contribute "thoughtfully."
As for some news: Met Ford Hutchinson at the dinner mentioned above. He's back in civilian garb, with a firm here in Philadelphia as a management trainee; Ford's wife Pat is also working - with a major drug firm in the city. John S. Dickey Jr. continues his geological studies at Princeton and has about two years to go toward his Ph.D. John's wife commutes daily to Swarthmore from Princeton, but I didn't have an opportunity to ask President Dickey what it is that she's studying.
A letter and wedding picture came in from Al Davies; Al married Patty Weinstock last summer in New York. Al is working with his father's real estate firm in New York and is beginning to find that the life of a businessman requires acceding to many demands upon his time outside of the business itself. It seems that Al is now an appointee to the city's Electrical Licensing Board (a very young appointee). The group licenses and disciplines all electricians in the city and consists of seven men - one a representative from the real estate industry that's Al. He tells me that Mark Cory is a lieutenant at Travis AFB, MATS center for the West Coast and processing point for all personnel going to and coming from Viet Nam. Mark is married — to the former Betsy Frazer — and lives in Fairfield, Calif.
Before hitting you with marriage news - a couple of Peace Corps notes — I have a picture of Ash Hartwell conducting a class m English to a group of Tanganyikans. No further information of his whereabouts. Kevin Lowther and Tim Kraft, both Peace Corps returnees, have turned recruiters and recently visited Hanover to sign up a new bunch of men for the Corps. Kevin spent two years teaching history in Freetown, Sierra Leone and Tim was a community development worker in Guatemala during that period.

He will help care for inpatients and outpatients and will assist m surgery at the hospital; 65 of the hospital's 150 beds are for leprosy patients John's fellowship of $1,513 enabled him to leave last month for a five-month stay at the Institut Medical Evangelique at Kimpese, the Republic of Congo. John, a junior in the University of lowa College of Medicine, will be involved in all activities of the 100-bed hospital in Kimpese, including assisting in surgery and helping with the new public health and preventive medicine programs.
Bill Bates made the Hartford Times with a story about his successes in the insurance field. His company lauded him for his progress and made him a member of a specia! Vice President's Club for outstanding agents. George Gaffney remains in Poland as recipient of a Reynolds Scholarship for foreign study. He's doing research in theoretical physics at Warsaw University's Institute for Theoretical Physics. I'm sure George has gone beyond the point where a letter explaining his work will be completely beyond my comprehension so I'll just congratulate him and not ask for a letter.
And now - the weddings: Bill Blumen schein and Patricia Madden were married m February in New York. Bill is with the Navy somewhere in the Far East now, I think. It seems that the bride is Billy Madden's sister - a Big Green gridder along with Bill. She graduated as a fine arts major from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo Bruce Algar was wed to Judith Dyer in February, also. They're living in California; Bruce is at USC's School of Architecture. Don McKinnon, as mentioned, also joined the ranks of the marrieds - His wife is the former Nancy Hailer, a Lesley College alumna. And - Steve Frank married the former Nancy Kay Wilson in California earlier this year. No more information available on this one.

That will do it for this month. As someone has said — keep those cards and letter coming in, folks. See you with the next cclumn—and don't avoid your responsibilities to the Alumni Fund. The College is depending on the Fund Drive to supply a good percentage of its operating budget for next year.
