It's going to be a busy month for '54s in the Hanover area. Dick Fowler is chairing a picnic sponsored by him and other Class of '54 Hanover residents for the sons and daughters of all '54s attending Dartmouth. What could be a nicer way to be welcomed into the Dartmouth family?

The rest of the Class not lucky enough to be represented by sons and daughters in Hanover, will have to represent itself for our mini-reunion scheduled for the Harvard weekend, on the 25 and 26 of this month. The mini-reunion will coincide with the fall executive committee meeting to be chaired by our able Dave Mandelbaum. We hope that a number of classmates will join the executive committee for this weekend. Most of us will be staying at the Woodstock Inn where the Class has reserved a block of rooms. If you haven't made your arrangements up to now, won't you try to join us? By the time you read this column the full details regarding the mini-reunion will have reached you in Jim Love's newsletter. It should be a great weekend for all, including dinner and cocktails at the Woodstock Inn Friday night and cocktails at the Dent Cabin after the game Saturday.

Even though the Alumni Fund is old news by now, I would be remiss if I didn't offer my congratulations and the congratulations of the whole class to George Voss for a fantastic performance in his first year as head agent. The Class showed a remarkable gain in giving with a grand total of $55,741 donated by the end of the fund drive. This is a great gain over our previous non-reunion year. It is a performance of which we can all be proud.

Due to some required editing of the June column, the anouncement of John Pratt's new book was omitted from the column. The fact that the news is late should not take away from the excitement of our class author going to print. Viking Press has published John's book Laotian Fragments. To quote the press release,

"The Laotian Fragments ... both fearing and revealing, the story takes place during the Clandestine War in Laos in which Colonel Pratt actually fought. The hero is a silver star winner, a Terry and the Pirates character turned tragic protagonist in the conflict of blood and shadows torn from the headlines." If you haven't read John Pratt's new book, get to your bookstore now and support our newest class author!

Dick Davidoff has informed us that his firm of Davidoff, Levinson, and Davidoff has merged with Cantor and Shaw to form the new legal firm of Cantor, Shaw and Davidoff, P.C. with offices in the Pan Am Building. It sounds like Dick is flying high!

Chubb and Sons, Inc. has announced that Tom Kelsey was elected a director and was named senior underwriting officer for all classes of insurance except Aviation Marine and Surety. "Kels" is a senior vice president of Chubb and Sons, Inc. and vice president of both Federal Insurance Company and Vigilant Insurance Company. He has served as national manager of the Commercial property division of Chubb and Sons, Inc. It is amazing that after all the time Kels spent on class affairs, he still had time to tend to his business. Congratulations Kels!

George Kingsley has been appointed general agent of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company's Buffalo Office. George has been with New England Life since 1965. He was elected a second vice president of the company in 1970. He was appointed agency manager in Buffalo in July 1972. Last year under his direction, the Buffalo Agency was number three in the company. George and family are living at 87 Wolfshire Road in Williamsville, N.Y.

Textron announced in June the selection of Maurice Wilkins as director of investment management. Prior to joining Textron, Maurice was vice president, investments, of the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company of Greenwich. Conn., a subsidiary of Avco. In his new position, he will head Textron's investment management department. I am sure it will be an exciting and stimulating position for Maurice, who has had an extensive investment and banking background.

William (Pete) Barker has increased his responsibilities with the Columbia Broadcasting System. Pete was previously vice president of planning for the parent company and has now been named vice president of the CBS/Columbia group, with responsibilities for development functions, including planning and people.

John Scoville is a new member of the board of directors of Harza Engineering Company International, says a release from Harza Engineering in Chicago. John has been with the company since 1957 and was elected associate in 1967, and vice president in 1968. The Scovilles live at 919 Pawnee Road, which accomodates John and wife Elizabeth; John III, 17; Susan, 15; and James and William, 13. John is also an alumnus of Thayer School.

Our classmates have not only increased their responsibilities in the business world, but also in the academic world, as witnessed by the announcement of the selection of Dr. James L. Conrad Jr. as dean of the faculty at Nichols College. Jim has been chairman of the Social Science Department and has also been promoted to a full professor in history. After completing his education at Dartmouth, he received his A.M. degree from Clark University and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Jim has been with Nichols administration and faculty since 1957. Jim and his wife Anita and two sons, Michael and Jeffery, live on Tanyard Road in Dudley, Mass.

Also in the academic world, Jack Donahue has been honored by Cape Cod SportsMagazine as the 1973 Co-Soccer Coach of the Year. To quote the article which granted him this award, "Jack Donahue knows how to win, but most of all, he knows how important it is for all team members to participate. He is a special man who loves his players and loves to coach and has a great time doing it." What great words for a man in coaching to hear.

That takes us to the end of this column for now. We hope to see a whole bunch of you at the mini-reunion at the Harvard game. Join us at the Woodstock Inn on Friday before the game and at the Dent Cabin for a cocktail party after the game. Be sure you consult your latest newsletter for complete details about the weekend. See you there!
