By the time you read this, the elections will be over; as of the date of writing (early October), Lowell (Sonny) Thomas is reported 'way ahead in the polls in his race to become Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. Sonny, Tay, and offspring have lived in the biggest state since 1960; he has been a state senator since 1966, and this year received the Republican nomination for the Lieutenant-Governor's post.
Willard F. (Frank) Brown is now the director of marketing and sales for Le Chateau Champlain, the only five-star hotel in Montreal. Frank spent some time in Switzerland after graduation, then worked in New York for Canadian Pacific, which owns Le Chateau. The joint is already overbooked for the '76 Olympics, but anyone contemplating a visit anywhere serviced by the C-P chain ought to give the suave, bilingual housing expert a call.
The Schenectady papers carried a handsome picture of Bob Case, announcing his appointment as deputy chairman of the United Fund appeal there. Bob attended RPI's management development program after Dartmouth and is currently manager of General Electric's utilities operation in Schenectady. He is a member of many civic boards, and a retired lieutenantcolonel of the National Guard. Bob, Mary Frances, and the five other Cases live in nearby Glenville.
Your secretary and spouse spent three wonderful days in Hanover late in September, as participants in the Dartmouth Horizons program, a great eye-opener as to many recent developments in Hanover. In the course of our stay, we just happened to drop in at Pierce's for Saturday night dinner (roast beef, salad, potatoes, vegetables, homemade rolls and Sheila's famous cheesecake in strawberry sauce, all for a pittance). Reg and Nancy were in great form, and their delightful happy-hour rooms and dining hall were the site of a Tuck.'64 minireunion that reverberated around the hills of Etna. No one should visit that area without dining there, but be sure to call (603-643-2997) for reservations, as the word has spread.
Reg and Nancy are the source of much of the info on classmates which you find here; please, will the rest of you chip in with a word or two, whenever you have a chance?
Speaking of "Chip": Jim Coleman andDolores were in Hanover recently, as their second son matriculated with the class of '78. As most of you know, Chip is the d.a. of Monmouth County, N.J.
Likewise stopping at Pierce's for the same happy purpose, were Jim and Marge Wyckoff, whose son Steve was entering Dartmouth. Jim Jr. is at Denison, son Pete is at St. Lawrence, and a fourth son represents the fifth generation of Wyckoffs at Lawrenceville. Jim and Marge live in Geneva, N.Y., where Jim is chairman of the National Bank of Geneva, and spends many happy hours helping the guys and gals of Hobart College. Jim reports that he regularly sees his old Gile roomie, Ralph Fifield, of Boston and Sunapee, N.H.; they had a mini-reunion in Hanover in September.
DeWitt Baker has been elected vice president of W. R. Grace & Co., continuing in his position as group executive of the corporation's education services group. The latter is a leading distributor of books, films and records to educational libraries. Bud joined Grace1 last year after 23 years of experience in publishing and book distribution, most recently as executive vice president at Random House.
You won't be reading this until weeks after the Harvard game of October 26, but on that occasion a meeting of all available '46s was held at Bob and Jackie Kimball's; one of the major topics was, of course, the planning of the GTHES (Greatest Thirtieth Hanover's Ever Seen), when we will be reuning with our friends from '44 and '45 next June. The next issue of this column will contain a full report on meeting.
A hearty welcome to the Class of '46 is extended to John Peterson, who has adopted (and been adopted by) the Class in which he found the most and closest old friends. John owns a real estate firm in Peterborough, N.H.,in conjunction with his brother Walt '47, the recent Governor of New Hampshire who was our honored guest speaker at our 25th Reunion.
Among the few '46s we spotted at the UMass game in September were George Carr (who had a table at Pierce's later on), Buil Hinman, Gene Bokor (who was on his way to Middlebury for the soccer game, where son Bruce scored the only Green goal) and, of course, grandpa Bob Kimball, whose new office in College Hall is a delight.
Prexy Dave Weld is covering lots of New England this year. Daughters Gail and Susie are both at UNH, and Dave is at Choate. The ok lumber baron has been doing a great job, keeping in touch with all class officers and committees, to ensure that the GTHES is exactly that.
Just hit the bottom of the mailbag; keep those cards 'n' letters rollin' in.
'46 UP!
