At the time you read this, our 30th Reunion (Greatest Thirtieth Hanover's Ever Seen!) will be a few weeks away. As you know from the mailings you have been receiving from Jack Whitman and Jim Barnet, all the pieces have been put in place, and from the candlelight Class Banquet at the Hanover Inn to the great outing at Storrs to the Dixieland Jazz Band at the tent, to the dancing to "Big Band Sound," to the student panel moderated by Dean Brewster, to the golf and tennis tournaments, and all the other delightful happenings that accompany such a reunion, '46 is once again going First Class! For those of you who have not yet done so, send in your reservation envelope today, and the more than 300 classmates, wives, dates, and children who have already done so will be delighted to see you. And, don't forget, your friends from '44 and '45 will be back with us this time.
A belated item reached your secretary's desk, announcing the marriage in January of Carola Phelan to Michael Kane Sandoe, son of our Bob Sandoe. Mike is graduating from Dartmouth this year; his bride is a research assistant at the Medical School. Bob, as many of you know, is headmaster of the Cambridge School in Weston, Mass.
Dr. Tom Burnap has been appointed director of the department of anesthesiology at Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, Conn. Tom obtained his M.D. at the University of Southern California, and is a recognized authority on anesthesiology, and an expert in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care.
Horizon Bancorp, a bank holding company of Morristown, New Jersey, has announced the election of Kenneth J. Whalen as a member of its board of directors. Ken's full-time occupation is that of Vice President, Marketing, of American Telephone & Telegraph Co.
Those of you who subscribe to the Big GreenSports News would have noted that Anne Thomas, (daughter of our Sonny) a sophomore at Dartmouth, has inherited Pop's skiing ability and enthusiasm; she won the cross-country event at the Dartmouth, Williams and Middlebury Carnivals and finished second in the Easterns. The same article noted that Hillary Smith, daughter of your secretary, had an 11-2 record to lead the women's squash team, which compiled a 9-4 record, the best posted by any Dartmouth varsity team during the winter season. A letter from Sonny, now Lt. Governor of Alaska, agrees with me that the article might have given '46 its due recognition. Sonny and Tay were in Vermont for the Easterns, but unfortunately State business requires them to miss Reunion this year.
Bud Scheu and family are delighted to announce that after June 1975 their home address will be 3 North Balch Street, Hanover. Bud's company, Atkins & Merrill, now has four location's, including a new facility at Lebanon; flight training equipment is the principal part of the business, which regularly takes Bud to all parts of the world. Molly, who is finishing her Masters Degree in Counselling at Northeastern University, is looking forward to working on another garden in Hanover. Sons Ted and Nick are at Dartmouth, and daughter Jenny, a Middlebury graduate, lives in the Pacific Northwest. You sailing enthusiasts probably know that Ted's sailing team last year won the intercollegiate championship in Luders-44's, and will have defended that title by the time you read this.
Joe Davenport has been appointed a member of the Rockefuller University Council, a body of 65 national and international business and civic leaders who serve as advisors to the University, one of the world's few institutions devoted exclusively to education and research on the graduate level. Joe is chairman of the Board of Volunteer State Life Insurance Company in Chattanooga, Tenn., and serves on multitudinous other boards.
Sometimes the mail is a little bit slow; we recently received a clipping from the Norwalk, Conn., newspaper which reported that WarrenKealey was elected treasurer of the Norwalk Bar Association in January. Warren has practised law in Norwalk since 1951, and had attended Georgetown and University of Connecticut law schools after graduation from Dartmouth.
We are again indebted to Obie Obermayer, editor and publisher of the Northern VirginiaSun for sending a copy of "Editor's Viewpoint," a compilation of his provocative and forthright editorials during the past year. Any of you who would be interested in spending an evening reading thoughtful and wonderfully expressed viewpoints on government, politics, teaching our children, economics, land use,. with such interesting incidentals as the growing number of sex-for-sale massage parlors in Northern Virginia, should ask Obie for a copy. Price $1.50; address 1227 North Ivy Street, Arlington, Va. 22210.
That raps it up until Reunion where we look forward with great pleasure to seeing all of you, and to having a successor elected as your secretary, to continue these columns. Many thanks to all of you for all of your assistance; it's been a great four years.
'46 UP!
