From Springfield, Mass., comes the news that George Hopkins has become vice president of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. George joined Mass. Mutual in 1948, was regional group manager for Greater New York from 1954 to 1968, and has been second vice president since then.

Any sharp-eyed readers of the PhiladelphiaEvening Bulletin would have spotted Jim Shute, starring in a large advertisement for Republic Steel. Jim is Philadelphia district sales manager; the ad shows him (handsome and smiling, as ever) describing the many benefits of the Steel Service Center. We are indebted to Charlie Donovan '43 for sending us a copy.

J. Vernon Lamb reports that his son Joe made the U. S. Olympic Ski Team last winter, in the Nordic combined event. Pop (a former Big Green skier, and now president of Lamb Lumber Co., Inc.) was in charge of all Nordic events for the World University Games, held in his home town of Lake Placid last winter, and is chariman of the organizing committee for the forthcoming World Biathalon. All four of the Lamb children are, of course, great outdoorsmen.

Bill Spoor has been named chairman and chief executive officer of the Pillsbury Company. This welcome word appeared in the Wall Street Journal on January 5, just as we went to press. Bill's interest in history led him to look for a job in a company with international operations, and he joined the Minneapolis company as an assistant sales supervisor in its New York export office. After a series of posts in Pillsbury's overseas and export divisions, he was promoted in 1968 to vice president and general manager.

A major article in a recent Wall Street Journal featured Gene Cafiero, group vice president of Chrysler Corp., in charge of all U. S. and Canadian automotive operations, and his sweeping program aimed at enhancing the quality of assembly line life for the workers. Gene has been with Chrysler since 1953; the article is a must for everyone interested in progressive efforts at upgrading worker morale and interest while bolstering productivity and quality. The cover story of Finance Magazine, for November, calls Gene "a strong administrator who is given particular credit for the resurgence in Chrysler quality."

By now most (or all) of you have received the recent report from Bequest and Estate Planning chairman Frank Ettari. His concluding sentence bears repeating: "As a true leader in higher education, Dartmouth deserves our support not just because of love and loyalty, but also because there are few, if any, better places where such an investment enjoys the unique privilege of shaping tomorrow." Amen.

Lest some of you haven't heard the news, the Montreal-New York trains are running again, and stopping in White River Junction. Granted, the northbound stops at 4:50 a.m., and the southbound at 12:23 a.m., so it's not exactly the best way for the boys to send their dates back home. But there's dining and bar service, and that beats the Summer of '42.

'46 up.
