Well, it seems strange for me to say this now ... but HAPPY HOLIDAYS. The reason I say that is because I am writing this article a little earlier than usual. And that's because I am about to take a little vacation out in the Far West. I'll be driving up the west coast of California between Los Angeles and San Francisco, hovering for a while around Big Sur. After that, I just intend to drift to the Grand Canyon or down to Texas. Hopefully, I'll call those of you who are out in that neck of the woods.

As of this writing, it appears as if the Big Green is heading for some kind of record in the football annals of Hanover: no touchdowns in two games! Somehow, however, I think Jake will pull us through! I plan to be at the Yale game in New Haven as well as the Columbia game in Hanover. Hopefully, if I run into you, I will have gotten some ideas for class activities, per the newsletter that you have already received. If not, I strongly urge your suggestions to either me, Mike Hurd, or any member of the executive committee.

And now for all of the doctors in our class, some news from the medical field: Dick Knutson has just been elected president of the committee of interns and residents for 1974-1975. This committee, located in New York City, is the largest organization representing house staff in the nation. Now, if we could get Dick to help organize some activities for the Class the way he so capably handles what could be one of the most difficult groups of people in the world ... !!! No rap at Dick, though. He was an active participant in our reunion activities this past June ... especially around the bar. I think he was trying to develop some new kind of anesthesia!

Then there are other kinds of doctors: would you believe the joint responsibilities of professor of marine sciences, chairman of the curriculum in marine sciences and director of the marine sciences program - all at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These are all the new responsibilities for Dr. Dirk Frankenberg, who has just joined the faculty at that school. Evidently, North Carolina finally got Dirk out of the state of Georgia, where he has been the acting head of the zoology department at the University of Georgia as well as having earned his M.S. and Ph.E. at Emory University. And, in addition, Dirk is an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of Southeast Biologists, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, and the Ecological Society of America. It is nice to see some one truly interested in advancing science, especially ecology! Now all Dirk has to do is to clean up Chapel Hill's act!!!

For any of you in the 13 western states, Alaska and Hawaii, John Jay Herpel has been named western regional sales manager for Amercoat Products. Just call him in Fullerton, Calif., and he'll advise you regarding high-performance coatings for steel; specialty mortars; surfacings; and grouts!!! Who knows? They (grouts and mortars) may become household words!

I mentioned before that I hope to see some classmates as I travel in the Far West. Well, other classmates have been doing the same. For example, our former class secretary, WayneFrench, along with his wife Joan, spent their summer vacation in Virginia Beach. Having heard Mike Hurd's offer of hospitality at the class reunion, Wayne took him up on it and spent some time with Mike and his wife Ann in Norfolk. Word has it that our class president is quite the host, especially when it comes to serving martinis. I guess the Hurd's drinking habits were not a fluke at the reunion! Anyway, Wayne suggests that anyone who happens to be in the area should definitely give Mike a call. He may pump you for some ideas for the Class ... but then again, he'll also pump you full of martinis'

Then there's one of the great photographic talents in our class, if not in the school and, if not in the country - Dave Robinson. He was in New York recently setting up a showing of his photography to be scheduled some time next year. He showed me some samples of his work Let me tell you - it is both superb and an excellent example of a great use of imagination. Many of his pictures were taken in Italy, using the theme "Reflections in Italy." Every picture was taken into the reflection of a store window or a car window or into a pool of water or into the canals in Venice. It is most unique and provocative. If you have any interest in photographic art for your home or office, I assure you that it would be wise to explore it with Dave. Contact me if you want further information.

And, speaking of contacting, I have had just about no feedback from anyone in the Class in the past month. Consequently, this article will be shorter than usual. I urge you and/or your wife to sit down for a minute and tell us what's happening. I'd also like your comments as to how you feel about this column. Are there other things that you would like to read about? You know, I'm new at this game and can use all of the help I can get. So, don't be bashful. Remember, just as you like to read about some of your classmates' accomplishments, so they want to hear about yours.
