Since many of the New England people would be visiting with each other at Big Green football games during the course of the Fall (and hopefully many others as we plan a series of tailgating functions at the games), I thought it might be a good idea to "dedicate" this month's column to all '59ers who live quite a distance from Hanover, whether they live in big cities or small, out-of-the-way places close to nature.
Take Joe Wattleworth (Lazy J Ranch, Rt. 1, Box 533 A, Williston, Fla. 32696). A couple of years ago, he "decided to get a few acres in the country." So, he bought a modest 320-acre ranch complete with a herd of cows! And, if that wasn't enough, Joe has gotten himself involved in some very interesting vocational and avocational interests. Joe spends his working days as the professor of civil engineering and director of the transportation research center at the University of Florida. As such, he is responsible for the graduate program in transportation engineering and a large research program in transportation systems. I guess he gets a lot of practice in transportation traveling around a 320-acre ranch! And, as a hobby, Joe has been training golden retrievers, having recently competed in the amateur retriever championships in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, (and, for those of you who never heard of Jackson Hole before, it's just a stone's throw from Washington Courthouse, Ohio!!!!!) I gotta admit, Joe, with cows and retrievers and the wide open spaces, it appears to be a great way to go.
Moving west a little, we'll run across TiborSogor (Derricotte House, Talladega College, Talladega, Ala. 35160). With his wife Melida and daughter Vivian Tibor relocated from Massachusetts to become an assistant professor of modern languages and a language laboratory supervisor. He is there on a one-year appointment. It is a small Black college which has an excellent exchange program with Dartmouth. As such, Tibor is trying to recruit good Black students for the Big Green. While this is going on, he also finds time to work toward his Ph.D. Good luck, Tibor. I'm sure you find the work most challenging.
Moving north, we heard from another educational institution. Dick Sanders (Rehabilitation Institute, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill. 62901) wrote to us last spring as follows: "I have recently received a number of calls to validate whether or not it was me on the ABC Wide World of Sports a few weeks back. My son, daughter, and I competed at Lake Placid on the Mt. Von Hovenberg Bobsled run in the annual Luge competition. Son Edward, 18, won a gold medal in the Junior National AAU and daughter Deborah won the Junior Olympic Gold Medal. The best the old man could do this year was an interview with Jim McKay and a feature of his rather sloppy run. All hands intend to try for the Olympic team at the run-offs next year. Wife Barbara is in honorable retirement from the same sport with two bronze medals from the 1973 competition; one in AAU Senior Women and one in the North American Championship." I think it is very exciting that a classmate can be so active as a professor and Ph.D., and still have time to excel in such a tough sport as bobsledding. Dick, we wish you and your family all of the best in the up-coming Olympic trials and we look forward to seeing you next year in the Olympics.
Also from Illinois, we hear from "Banger" Wells, Langbehn (2301 Haverford Road, Springfield, Ill. 62704) where he is in the insurance game. With his wife Suzanne and kids Jeff, Jake, and Amy (12, 11, and 5), "Banger" spends his fall season sitting on his duff, watching the Bob Blackman show, a highly rated Illinois television show that may be slipping somewhat in popularity! He did ask if two fellow classmates from Massachusetts are still alive - Jim Burke (11 Quaker Street, Northbridge, Mass. 01534) and Norm Blair (45 Richdale Road, Needham Heights, Mass. 02194), Well, fella, if you're an active reader of this column, you can now drop them a note - or vice-versa, Jim and Norm! He also asked about Dick Press's Broadway successes, which were written up in last month's '59 column.
Drifting west, we hear from two classmates in Denver. Dave Anderson has just moved from being an associate professor of foreign languages at Penn State University to become the chairman of the University of Denver's department of foreign languages and literatures. (We don't have Dave's new home address, but I am sure he can be reached through his department at the University of Denver, Denver, Colo. 80210). After getting his A.B. in Russian in Hanover, he received his M.A. in French from Michigan State University (1965) and his Ph.D. in romance languages from the University of North Carolina as well as Penn State. Dave, we all wish you the best of luck in your new venture.
Also in Denver is Kent Rickenbaugh (620 South University Boulevard, Denver, Colo. 80209). Kent appears to be involved in several business ventures, including tires, credit management and investment management. He is the chairman of the St. Joseph Hospital executive council and gets involved in such things as golf, duck hunting, skiing and even a wine cellar.
To the west and south, we heard from Dr. George LeFevre (832 Allerton Court, San Diego, Calif. 92109) where he is in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon. If I'd known that, George, you could have taken out the disc that I had removed from my back this past spring in New York. At the rates you surgeons make, George, things must be very comfortable for you! Seriously, though, it's a thankless kind of a job, in that people always complain about the cost and never give the thanks for jobs well done. So, George, all I can say is - keep up the sailing and the skiing with wife Sally and girls Kristen Lynn and Nicole. You deserve it!
Well, that's it from some of the other 44 states outside of New England. Let's hear from the rest of you. From what correspondence I do get, I know that there are a lot of guys who would be most interested to know what's going on with other '59ers.
