It's a veritable rarity at this stage of the game for '22 to welcome a new classmate. The last time was when President John G. Kemeny became a '22 classmate on the happy occasion of the Peter and Evelyn Kiewit weekend in October 1966. And now the Class extends a hearty welcome to Clarence W. Sanders, a long-time friend and distinguished contemporary. In saying that he wishes to be included in '22, Sandy explains that though he entered Dartmouth in 1917, he missed out on his sophomore year because he was trying to get into Army Aviation and when he returned to Hanover he spent his last three undergraduate years with '22. One of the more deciding factors, he adds, was because as a senior he lived at the Casque and Gauntlet House with the '22 delegation. Notice that it is because, not despite, which speaks well of the '22 lads including his roommate that year, no less than our own Spenny Smith. That was also the year, with Sandy as captain, that the Tennis Team, including our Johnny Carleton, had a remarkable record. Sandy won the New England Intercollegiate singles at Longwood and the doubles with Pete Howe '23.

Our new (?) classmate has achieved an eminent career as a geologist. He came to Dartmouth from St. Paul Central High School and after receiving his B.S. here in 1922, he went to the University of Minnesota where he met Ella Grace Haverson, his future wife, got his M.S. in geology, and coached the varsity tennis team. He then became an instructor and an assistant professor of geology at Washington University St. Louis. In 1925 while he was an instructor, Sandy and Ella Grace took the richer or poorer vow. He next began an association of 17 years with Shell Oil Co. During this period he was for a considerable time in The Hague and in paris as a geologist covering French West Equatorlial Africa, Italy, Southern France, and Ireland Back in the U.S.A., he also made time in 1934 to be one of the founders of the Dartmouth Club of Houston. He received a U.S. War Department Citation for his civilian services during World War II. Post-war, he became chief geologist for the Danciger Oil and Refining Co. of Forth Worth, and subsequently manager of operations for Greenbrier Oil Co., Mendota Oil Co., and Gorce Oil Co. More recently he has been associated with the McKnight Petroleum interests at Houston, and last summer in recognition of his management he was designated honorary general chairman of the McKnight companies. He has now retired with more time for sailing and golf. Wonder if he and Jim Cravens, our other Houstonite, ever see each other at Dartmouth affairs.

Sandy is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, La Sociedad Geologic Mexicana, and the Houston Geological Society. He is the author of many articles in technical journals and a biographical sketch of him appears in "Two Thousand Men of Achievement."

Sandy and Ella Grace are the parents of three sons, Richard, William and Donald. She is also recognized as a leading painter of the Southwest.

And they, "we'd like you to know," are now in the '22 family. A warm welcome to them from all Twoters. And as the Hanover temperature registers - 10 below outside and 64 inside, it is reassuring to have the Sanders in the clan. Under these conditions many classmates could become very, very friendly.

Dana Fitts has left us in sorrow. His obituary will appear in this or a later issue. Dick Bowler was in Hanover in late January and it was great to talk with him, even though briefly, and sadly, at the funeral services for his brother. Dr. John P. Bowler '15.

'22 wives - in fact, all Dartmouth wives, sisters, mothers and grandmothers - in the Boston area - have a treat in store if they attend the March 20 meeting of the Dartmouth Women's Club at. Longwood Towers, Brookline. The meeting begins at 11 a.m., luncheon follows at noon, then Dorothy Bates, a Smith graduate and wife of our loyal GrayBates, presents her delightful, illustrated lecture on "Discovering America." Too bad, despite the progress men are making, the meeting is discriminatory, ladies only.

If you have the time, the Hanover Inn (603-643-4300) has the rooms for 22's spring get-together, April 26-27. Relaxation and enjoyment with your Class - what more can you ask?
